Mentor Minute
September 2025
The Mentor Minute is designed to support lead mentors and mentors in VBCPS. Each month, the newsletter will focus on a key area of support for new teachers, offering resources and strategies aligned with the focus area. We will also use this space to spotlight the amazing work of mentors across the division. This month’s newsletter is being shared with Lead Mentors only, as you are in the process of finalizing mentor-mentee matches based on which staff members are working with new educators. Please share this newsletter with all assigned mentors to support their conversations in September.🙂
In this edition:
- Focus: Laying a Strong Foundation with the Four Pillars of Mentoring
- Strategies to Try
- What's Happening this Month: Important Dates and Events that Impact Mentoring
- Monthly Mentor Spotlight
🔍This Month's Focus: Laying a Strong Foundation 🔎
New educators are just two weeks into working with students and four weeks into their overall experience. While the year is still new, they are already navigating classroom routines, curriculum demands, and emotional exhaustion. Many are beginning to wonder:
- "Am I doing this right?"
- "Will I ever feel caught up?"
As mentors begin their work, it’s important to remember that the Four Pillars of Mentoring — Guide, Share, Reflect, and Connect — represent the how of mentoring. These pillars provide the foundation for building trust, offering personalized guidance, and helping new educators feel seen, supported, and connected.
- Guide – Offer practical, experience-based advice rooted in your knowledge of teaching and school culture
- Share – Provide tools, best practices, and lived experiences to help new educators build confidence
- Reflect – Create space for mentees to process their challenges and growth
- Connect – Help new educators build relationships and a sense of belonging within the school and division
While the Four Pillars describe how mentors show up for their mentees, the Mentoring Scope and Sequence identifies what to consider each month based on where new teachers are in their journey. For September, two key priorities emerge:
-
Strengthening classroom routines and behavior expectations
-
Providing emotional encouragement and perspective
These areas are reflected across the Scope and Sequence at every level. They are especially impactful during the early weeks of classroom life, when structure, stamina, and support are essential to success.
Below are links to the Mentoring Framework for each level.
🎯Strategies to Try🎯
The strategies below help Guide, Share, Reflect, and Connect with your mentee in two areas of the September Mentoring Scope and Sequence.
1. Learning Environment
New educators are still establishing routines and learning how to manage the flow of their classroom. These strategies help mentors guide practical adjustments and promote reflection on what’s working.
-
Routine Tune-Up Conversation (Guide and Reflect):
Ask: “What part of your day with students feels messy or draining? What’s one small change we can try to make it smoother?"
-
Quick Non-Evaluative Observation (Guide and Reflect):
Watch a short classroom moment (a transition, warm-up, or activity) and offer one glow and one grow. Keep it specific, supportive, and focused on systems.
2. Emotional Support
These early weeks can bring emotional highs and lows. These strategies help mentors normalize the experience and support new educators in building confidence and resilience.
-
Rose & Thorn Check-In (Reflect):
Use this simple prompt at your next meeting:“What’s going well this week (rose)? What’s been hard (thorn)?”
-
Support a Self-Care Boundary (Guide, Share and Reflect):
Help them identify one realistic boundary to help them preserve energy and focus, like: -
Logging off email by 6 PM
-
Taking one weekend day fully off from schoolwork
-
Using “Do Not Disturb” during planning
When mentoring, you don’t need to solve every problem, but by using the Four Pillars with intention, you can help new educators feel seen, capable, and connected.

Event Information

Email your initial roster to PGI@vbschools.com by Friday, September 5th.
Many rosters have already been turned in! Thank you for your prompt attention. Remember, we will go through this process again with a due date of October 4th. This is a key step to confirm and verify the data for the VDOE New Teacher Mentor Program. Prepopulated forms will be sent out on Sept. 19th, and we need you to verify that the information is accurate, and add or remove relationships as needed. Your diligence in this process is appreciated.
As a Mentor, your influence goes far beyond logistics; you help shape the experience of new educators. This session focuses on developing your ability to facilitate conversations that foster reflection, confidence, and professional growth. You'll learn how to ask effective questions and guide your peers in uncovering their own insights, all without needing to be the expert. Through practice and discussion, you'll gain strategies to support new educators in their ongoing work, reflect on their practice, strengthen their relationships, and ultimately contribute to their success.
Please share this opportunity with your new elementary teachers. This Canvas asynchronous course is designed as a series of micro-learning modules focused on the use of Morning Meeting to build classroom community, promote positive student-to-student relationships, and foster inclusive and safe learning environments. Each module covers a specific topic and is designed to be completed in 15 minutes or less. You are welcome to complete all the modules or just the ones that fit your learning needs.
The Empowered Educator series, open to all teachers in their first three years, launches in September with level-specific workshops on strengthening and sustaining a climate for learning. Registration is available in Frontline, and the flyer should be shared with early-career teachers.
