New Mathematics Curriculum New Mathematics Curriculum

August 2026

Dear West Seneca Central School District K-8 Families,

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences for all students, West Seneca Central School District will be implementing a new mathematics curriculum, Eureka Math², in grades K–8 beginning in the fall of 2026.

Why Are We Making This Change?

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has launched a statewide Numeracy Initiative focused on strengthening students’ mathematical literacy. Numeracy extends beyond performing calculations; it helps students think critically, solve problems, communicate their reasoning, and apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations.

To align with this Statewide vision and ensure that all WSCSD students have access to rigorous, engaging, and Standards-aligned mathematics instruction, our district is transitioning to a curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and meaningful problem-solving experiences. This shift will help students build the skills and confidence needed for success in school and beyond.

Preparing for a Successful Transition

Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, our teachers have participated in extensive professional learning focused on the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, Mathematical Practices, and NYSED Numeracy Briefs. K–12 mathematics teachers have engaged in grade-level professional learning cycles designed to strengthen instructional practices and deepen understanding of effective mathematics instruction. Professional learning and instructional support will continue throughout the summer and the 2026–2027 school year to ensure a smooth and successful implementation.

About Eureka Math²

Eureka Math² is a comprehensive, research-based mathematics program designed to engage students in deep mathematical thinking while building confidence and understanding.

  • Thoughtful Design: The curriculum provides a carefully sequenced progression of mathematical concepts and routines within and across grade levels. Built-in instructional supports help teachers deliver grade-level instruction with confidence from the very first day of school.

  • Active Student Engagement: Students participate in daily opportunities to explore mathematical ideas, engage in meaningful discussions with peers, explain their thinking, and solve authentic real-world problems.

  • Support for Every Learner: Eureka Math² includes embedded scaffolds and supports that help all students access grade-level content. The program provides resources for multilingual learners, targeted intervention opportunities, and enrichment activities that challenge students to extend their thinking.

Looking Ahead

We are excited about the opportunities this curriculum will provide for our students and believe it will strengthen their mathematical understanding while fostering curiosity, perseverance, and confidence as learners. We look forward to partnering with families throughout this transition and will continue to share additional information and resources as implementation approaches.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and schools.

Sincerely,

Nora O’Bryan
