The First 5 Days: The Key to Success

The First 5 Days: The Key to Success

Nothing is more important than building a strong relationship with your students. John C. Maxwell, who, according to Inc. magazine, is "widely considered to be one of the world's top leadership thinkers," said, "Students don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

From the Safety Office:

The Environmental Health & Safety Office can provide safety training to your science teachers and asks that any site wanting this type of training to contact the Safety Compliance Technician (SCT) that oversees that site (email is best).

The Chemical Classification List was updated in 2019 and is attached here. The Safety Office asks that any chemicals that a science teacher is wanting to purchase that are NOT on the Approved list to contact the safety office safetyoffice@sandi.net to request a Product Evaluation, please include the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific chemical they want evaluated and the lesson plan the chemical will be used in. Once we complete the evaluation we will notify them via email.

Keynote Presentation: "Justice-Centered STEM Education"

Justice-Centered STEM Education" Dr. Okhee Lee shared a call to action with our STEAM Teachers and Leaders for a more justice-centered approach to STEM learning that might inspire some new ideas as we all engage students in learning this year.

GVC Updates: BioLE, ChemES, HChemES, PhysU

Updates to GVC are now posted! Check out the new HS GVC Page on our Website!

BioLE, ChemES, PhysU - Flexbooks Available!

Our Science Department has curated online textbooks for Biology: The Living Earth, Chemistry in the Earth System/ Honors Chemistry in the Earth System and Physics of the Universe, aligned to the California Framework for NGSS and our GVC courses. These online text resources are student facing materials to accompany the GVC which is available on CANVAS and on our website.

A district wide waiver for Williams Act was submitted, so that these updated resources will suffice in lieu of the currently adopted text. To qualify for Williams sufficiency the flexbooks must be downloaded onto student Chromebooks so they can be accessed by students at anytime. This screencast will walk you (and your students) through the download process.

Back to School - Proficiency Scale Intro

Proficiency Scale for Making a Cake
zoom_out_map open_in_new

Suggestion from a colleague: Consider increasing awareness and understanding of Proficiency Scales by asking students (and parents?) to compose a proficiency scale for something they love- making a pizza or riding a bicycle, etc. Here is an example for making a cake.

Did you know? We have a district subscription to Newsela!

Donors ChooseL: doubling donations to STEM projects from teachers of color!

zoom_out_map

As you gear up for this new school year, an Anonymous Funder is committed to supporting teachers of color like you help their students learn and connect with the world of math & science. To do that, they’re doubling donations to STEM projects from teachers of color!

Submit a project under $1,000 for supplies you need to help your kids become the next Galileo or Mae Jemison, and an Anonymous Funder will double any donations you receive, while funds last. You know what your students need most to engage with STEM concepts — whatever it is, this generous partner will help you get it twice as fast.

Did you find a great curriculum resource? Participated in a great research opportunity? Do you enjoy reading one of the books we offered teachers? Had a great PLC or PD meeting that you want to recommend for other teachers?

We want to hear your recommendations and share them with other science teachers!

If you have a favorite curriculum, reading, activity, or PLC plan that you want to recommend to other teachers we want to capture a short (1-3 minutes) video of you describing it and share it with other unified science teachers!

Email tlerner@sandi.net and one of us will come to visit you and record a short clip !

Khan Academy: Middle School Science Content

Khan Academy is not just for math and today we’re excited to introduce hundreds of new pieces of middle school science content so that Khan Academy is your 1-stop-shop for foundational skill practice in science.

From climate change to genetics, our new biology and Earth & space science courses offer hundreds of exercises and articles that are all aligned to discipline specific Next Generation Science Standards.

Learn about the new content

These new courses are all mastery learning-based and like everything else on Khan Academy, they are free!

Science Joke! 😂

You'd think that atoms bonding with other atoms would mean they're being friendly, but really they steal each other's electrons.

How ionic.
