What Has Been Happening in Ms. Carlson's Class? What Has Been Happening in Ms. Carlson's Class?

This year in 8th Grade Social Studies we focus on the beginning years of American History. We just wrapped up an informative unit on the Native Americans who lived and thrived in North America before the Europeans arrived and we are starting our unit on the Colonization of America. Students will learn about all 13 colonies and how we came together to fight for our independence. It is a fun year celebrating our 250th Anniversary as a country!

Fake Paper Money Needs to Stay at Home Fake Paper Money Needs to Stay at Home

Some of our students have started using their time at school to create paper money. While this may seem like a fun activity, we have noticed students displaying their money, comparing amounts, and arguing over who has more. This has become a distraction and is taking away from valuable learning time.

Last week during lunches, Mrs. Lamothe reminded all students that paper money is a toy meant to be enjoyed at home. Students should not use school resources to create it. If students choose to make paper money at home using their own materials, it must remain at home and should not be brought to school.

Moving forward, any paper money that is being used in a disruptive manner in classrooms, hallways, or the cafeteria will be collected and discarded.

Thank you for your support in reinforcing these expectations with your child. Middle school can be challenging enough without adding unnecessary disagreements between friends. We appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a positive school environment where students can focus on learning and enjoying their time together!

Reminder About Respectful Language Reminder About Respectful Language

We want Scott Middle School to be a place where all students and staff feel safe, valued, and respected. Recently, we have noticed an increase in students using profanity and inappropriate language, including directing these words toward staff members. We appreciate our families’ support in reminding students that the words we choose matter and that respectful communication is an important part of our school community. According to our Code of Conduct, inappropriate language can range from a Level 1 to a Level 3 offense. Moving forward, students who swear at or curse out a staff member will be addressed at Level 3, with an initial consequence of In-School Suspension. Students will also be expected to take responsibility for their actions, including apologizing for their behavior. Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce the importance of kindness, respect, and accountability at Scott Middle School!

October PBIS Focus- No Class Cuts October PBIS Focus- No Class Cuts

Our PBIS team meets twice each month to analyze behavior data, review our current supports, and identify a goal to focus on in the weeks ahead. Last week, our team decided to focus on being present and on time for class.

After reviewing our data, we found that cutting class (being unaccounted for more than 10 minutes) and arriving late to class were two of our most frequent infractions, with 23 and 13 incidents, respectively.

To encourage students to make positive choices, Mrs. Lamothe will run an office discipline report on October 23. Students with no class-cutting referrals will earn an extra recess period during the first week of November!

We hope this incentive encourages students to make it to class on time and be present and ready to learn. After all, we “Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve,” and that starts with being where we need to be, when we need to be there!

Thank you to our families and staff for partnering with us to reinforce these important habits and help our students succeed.

Hall Sweeps Have Begun Hall Sweeps Have Begun

We have begun conducting random hall sweeps to help ensure students arrive at class on time and are ready to learn.

Here’s how hall sweeps work: After the bell rings, our Deans and Administration walk the hallways to identify students who have not yet arrived at class. Students who are still in the hallway are brought to the cafeteria for a brief conversation and reminder about the importance of being on time and making the most of their learning time.

We will follow these steps when a student is identified during a hall sweep:

  • First hall sweep: The student's name is recorded, and they receive a warning and reminder of our expectations.

  • Second hall sweep: The student's family is contacted.

  • Third hall sweep: The student's family is contacted to arrange an after-school or before-school detention.

  • Continued hall sweeps: Additional consequences may be assigned, and a family meeting may be scheduled to develop a plan for success.

Our goal is to help every student build the habit of arriving to class on time and maximizing their learning opportunities. Thank you to our families and staff for reinforcing these expectations and partnering with us to support student success.
