February 2026 Birch Grove Bulletin
February 2026
A Message from Principal Webster
Dear Families and Caregivers,
As we turn the calendar to February, I want to start by acknowledging the heavy heart our city is carrying right now. You and your families may be experiencing anxiety regarding safety and immigration enforcement in our neighborhoods. I know many of our families are feeling stressed, fearful, or exhausted. Our priority, above all else, is the physical and emotional safety of your children. We remain committed to welcoming every student, regardless of background or status, with love and stability. We have staff available to support our students through these trying times.
This February, our celebration of Black History will give us an opportunity to amplify and lift up the major contributions past and present of black people. We are focusing not just on history, but on Black Joy and Resilience. We can't wait for your students to share with you all the amazing learning taking place and the visibility of the learning in the building. You'll be able to see what's happening during conferences!
THANK YOU for all of your donations to our Glow Run!! As of 2/2, we are currently at 75% of our goal. Your donations do so much to support student experiences and learning. Students are pumped up to participate in our Glow Run this Friday. If you haven't had an opportunity to donate or send out to friends and families, please consider doing so. See below for the donation link.

What's Happening at Birch Grove?
BG 5th Grader Receives Safety Award
Recently, a delivery driver attempted to enter the school at the wrong door, knocking on the window to have the students let them in. Fifth grade student, Kai Vang, immediately reminded peers that exterior doors are to always remain closed and reported the delivery driver to both Ms. Webster and Mrs. Patterson. He alerted us that "a stranger is trying to enter the building, and we are not to let them in." Staff were able to direct the delivery driver to the right door. Kai demonstrated a dedication to keeping our school safe!
Our admin team let district security staff know about our safety victory, and they created an official award for Kai. Ms. Webster highlighted Kai in that morning's principal's message. Coincidentally, District 279 Director of Security and Emergency Management Troy Schriefels happened to be visiting BG that morning and was able to join Ms. Webster and Mr. Goltz in presenting Kai's award. This made the whole morning official and VERY memorable. Birch Grove is so proud.
Indian Education Medicine Wheel
Birch Grove Indian Education students worked together to create a medicine wheel mural. The medicine wheel is a representation of the connection and interaction of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual realities. Students learned the meaning behind the directions and colors of the wheel, and worked in groups to paint each quadrant.
East: Yellow, representative of springtime, sunrise, and new beginnings
South: Red, representative of summer, a time of growth, and energy
West: Black, representative of fall, the setting sun, and the time to look within
North: White, representative of winter, wisdom and reflection.
Ms. Robinson's Spelling Bee
Ms. Robinson organized a spelling bee for her class to challenge the students. Participants practiced 20 additional words beyond their usual weekly spelling test. Those who successfully spelled all 20 words proceeded to the second round, without prior practice of an additional 5 words. Leona, Jacob, Messiah, Mina, and Max are all winners. They volunteered to challenge themselves with little to no prior knowledge of what a spelling bee entailed. Ms. Robinson is so proud of these students who demonstrate a love for learning and a willingness to be challenged.
Arts Integration: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month
Every student at BG had the opportunity to contribute a heart for our Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month display to show their connection to the MLK quote: "I have decided to sick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."
Math Mentors
Mrs. Olson's 4th and 5th grade troupe joined Ms. Stone's 1st grade class for Math Mentors! The Math Mentors worked with their younger peers on math skills and math games. It is a great leadership opportunity for the 4th and 5th grade students and the 1st graders love connecting with an older role model!

Homework Starts with Home
Are you or someone you know at risk of losing your housing? The Homework Starts with Home program is grant funded and in partnership with Hennepin County and the YMCA. Here are guidelines of the program:
- Families must have a child enrolled in our school district and reside in Hennepin county.
- Families must meet income guidelines set by Hennepin county.
- Families must qualify for rent assistance of owing back rent and are at risk of eviction in order to receive utilities assistance.
- Families must provide something in writing that they owe back rent or are at risk of eviction (ledger of back rent owed, eviction notice, court date notice)
- Families must reach out before their eviction date/court date. Unfortunately we can't retroactively provide financial assistance if they have already moved.
Please reach out to Kendra Kuhlmann at HSWH@District279.org if you have questions or are interested in learning more about the Homework Starts with Home Program.

Save Receipts for School Supplies
The Minnesota Department of Revenue offers two valuable tax benefits for caregivers who purchase school supplies for their K-12 students: the K-12 Education Credit and Subtraction. These benefits can reduce caregivers’ taxes to increase their refund, but is only available for those who keep their receipts. Purchases for most school supplies, field trips, and musical instruments for school band are eligible. Most Minnesota caregivers qualify for the K-12 subtraction, which reduces their taxable income. Caregivers under certain income limits may also qualify for the K-12 credit, which can refund up to 75% of their costs – even for those who do not owe any taxes. Visit Revenue's website for details.
