Helping Our Kids Through Their Worries
Most people experience some level of anxiety in response to unfamiliar situations and everyday stressors. Anxiety is not a “bad thing” and is the body’s natural response in order to keep us alert and safe from threats (i.e., looking both ways before crossing the street or staying away from hot surfaces). However, when anxiety becomes severe and interferes with daily life, additional strategies need to be enacted to support children. It is important to remember that children learn to respond to their emotions based on the behaviors of others around them. Frequently discuss and practice strategies on how you manage anxiety and encourage an open atmosphere of talk around handling emotions. Remember, these skills are best practiced when calm!
The Child Mind Institute states that there are definite strategies to help students manage and overcome anxiety. They have created a list of skills associated with helping students overcome anxiety, to read their full list of strategies please follow this link.
In addition to the Child Mind Institute article, the book Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children by Wilson and Lyons is very helpful for parents to support their children through their anxiety and ultimately give them tools and the strength to take on difficult tasks. When working with children, it is important for them to learn they can overcome their worries and not allow their fears to control them.
