We are Emerson Elementary
January 2026
Dear Emerson Families,
We are excited to welcome our students and families back to Emerson Elementary as we begin the New Year together! January’s schoolwide focus is “New Year, New Goals,” and this is a wonderful time for students to reflect, set meaningful goals, and start fresh for the second half of the school year. Our staff is energized and ready to help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally as we work together to make 2026 a successful year.
Our character trait for January is Perseverance. We will be teaching students the importance of setting goals, staying motivated, and continuing to try even when learning feels challenging. Perseverance helps students build confidence, resilience, and a strong work ethic. Families can support this trait at home by:
- encouraging children to set small, achievable goals
- praising effort rather than just results
- and modeling a positive attitude when facing challenges.

A huge thank you to Ms. Montecastro for producing a truly fantastic Christmas program. She worked diligently with our students all semester, helping them grow from unsure performers into confident musicians. Her dedication and passion were clearly evident - well done!
We would also like to thank Ms. Hedgecock, Ms. Beal, Ms. DePasse, and Coach Goodson for their support in managing and organizing students during rehearsals. In addition, our art students did a wonderful job decorating the hallways and stage, adding a beautiful finishing touch to the program.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Board of Education and our superintendent, Mr. Wilkinson, for their continued support of our music class and the arts program as a whole.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our parents and families for your continued support, encouragement, and attendance. Your involvement and enthusiasm mean so much to our students and play a vital role in their confidence and success. Thank you for partnering with us and for celebrating our students’ hard work and accomplishments.
Rainy Day Pick Up
1st and 2nd will go out the front door one grade at a time to meet parents/guardians under the awning at the front door.
3rd and 4th will hold in the gym. Parents should park on Hooker street, and we will call for students as parents drive up.
5th and 6th will release as normal.
Thank you for working with us as we keep students safe and healthy.
Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can be developed through effort, persistence, and learning from mistakes. Families play a powerful role in nurturing this mindset at home.

Character Trait for January - Perseverance
Monthly Character Trait
- Students show perseverance by not giving up when things get hard, trying different strategies when stuck, asking for help instead of getting frustrated and stopping, practicing skills repeatedly, and breaking big tasks into smaller steps, demonstrating grit through actions like finishing a tough puzzle, learning an instrument, or sticking with a difficult math problem until they have figured it out. They show it through their actions and attitudes, not just their words.
- Sticking with a Task: Continuing to work on a difficult assignment, like a challenging math problem or a writing piece, even when it's frustrating.
- Trying New Approaches: When one method fails, they try a different strategy or rethink the problem instead of quitting.
- Managing Frustration: Using deep breaths or positive self-talk to calm down and refocus rather than giving up or getting upset.
- Seeking Help: Asking a teacher or peer for guidance when truly stuck, seeing it as a tool for growth, not failure.
- Breaking Down Goals: Dividing large tasks (like a science project) into smaller, manageable steps to build confidence.
- Practicing: Consistently practicing a skill, like tying shoes or playing an instrument, to improve over time.
