No Place for Hate Service Learning Project

During the week of January 20th, students will participate in the second No Place for Hate project of the school year. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the children will be expanding on the third-grade service-learning project and decorating sandwich bags to be used at Cathedral Kitchen.

Students will be reading the picture book, Those Shoes, and having a discussion about generosity, friendship, and wants and needs. Afterward, the children will be decorating the sandwich bags and completing a response about how it feels and what it looks like to be kind, respectful, and caring toward others who are in need.

The Great Kindness Challenge

Get ready! Woodcrest Elementary is excited to announce that we are participating in The 2025 Great Kindness Challenge where we will join thousands of schools across the country to create a culture of kindness. Your child will be part of a powerful and positive bullying prevention initiative that will lead to more kindness, unity, and respect at school and beyond.

Families can participate at home by using the Kindness Checklist (attached below) with ideas for kind deeds families may complete.

You can learn more about the Great Kindness Challenge at https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/.

LOVE for LA

To help build upon this kindness momentum, we are participating in a unifying service project entitled LOVE for LA. All students are invited to participate by bringing in new socks between January 20th and January 31st, 2025, to support those affected by the fires in LA.

The children will be writing notes of love at school, which we will attach to the donated socks. All donations will support LOVE for LA. Thank you for participating!

Preventing Illness in Schools

As we continue to journey through the winter months, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about an important health issue that tends to circulate during this time: norovirus, as well as other common seasonal illnesses like the flu.

Norovirus, in particular, is highly contagious and can spread quickly in school settings. Symptoms typically include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, which can lead to significant absenteeism if not managed properly. To help prevent its spread and ensure the health and safety of our students and staff, please keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Encourage Hand Hygiene: Remind family and friends to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the restroom, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing.
  2. Clean and Disinfect: Ensure that high-touch surfaces (such as doorknobs, light switches, desks, and faucets) are cleaned and disinfected regularly to help minimize the spread of germs.
  3. Stay Home If Sick: If a child or staff member is experiencing symptoms of norovirus, they should stay home for at least 24-48 hours after symptoms resolve to avoid spreading the virus. For respiratory illnesses, stay home until 24 hours after being fever-free without any fever-reducing medication.

Mrs. Olin is tracking illness. When possible, please report your child’s symptoms when reporting an absence due to illness. Please contact Mrs. Olin with any questions or concerns.

Woodcrest is a Fragrance-Free School

In an effort to be supportive to those with sensitivities and allergies, we are requesting that all students, staff, parents and family members avoid wearing fragrances or highly-scented products to school, (ie; perfume, bodywash, scented lotions & hand sanitizer, etc). We have a number of students and adults who react to fragrances with asthma, severe headaches and other anomalies. Although fragrances are lovely under many circumstances, we ask that people avoid wearing them when coming to Woodcrest School. Thank you for your support and cooperation!

Winter Weather

As we enter the colder months, we will continue to take students outside for recess whenever possible. Thank you for helping us to prepare your child(ren) for an enjoyable recess period.

  • Students should dress in layers, and bring jackets/coats, hats and gloves every day.
  • Please lable all clothing with your child's name in case an item is left behind during recess.

In the event of inclement weather, any cancellations of afterschool activities or extracurricular events are made by the District. The Facilities Department assesses conditions to ensure sidewalks and parking lots are safe, clean, and clear for students, staff, and visitors. Any cancellations will be communicated via District email and banners on the website.
