Center Community Chat
April 4, 2021
Dear Families and Staff,
Ready. Set. Go. Take 2 of our learning journey starts tomorrow! Many thanks to our CPS athletes and Center elves- Ms. Joyce and Ms. MacKessy for giving of their time to assemble and move desks into classrooms. A special thanks to Mr. Woodman for the extra hours he has been putting in to ensure we are ready for students to safely return to full-day learning tomorrow.
In addition to preparing the facilities our staff members have also been putting in extra hours to make sure students are assigned to the right classes, have a plan for arrival and dismissal, and are prepared to shift their learning models and welcome students back.
This week is Assistant Principal appreciation week. A big thank you goes out to Ms. Omobono as well as she has put in extra time and effort to ensure a smooth transition tomorrow. Please be sure to extend your thanks when you see her.
Please be sure to read through this Chat carefully as it likely contains many answers to your questions about the return to full in-person learning.

Note regarding curriculum:
Due to the transition in learning models, there may be an overlap in the curriculum when moving to a new teacher and classroom.

Buses… Students who live one mile or more from school qualify for bus transportation. There is no fee for a bus pass this year. There are two ways to register: 1. On the district website: https://www.chelmsford.k12.ma.us/domain/90 OR 2. email Peter Brekalis - brekalisp@chelmsford.k12.ma.us After registration is complete, you will receive a bus pass with your bus number and stop information.
Bus routes are no longer published. Parents can access the pickup and drop off information on their student's X2 account.
Lunch…Students will either be eating in their classroom or in the cafeteria. They have been assigned a seat and will stay in this seat for lunch for the remainder of the year. This is necessary to ensure students are 6 ft apart while unmasked to eat.
Bag lunches will be provided at no cost for the remainder of the year, there is only one option for the district provided lunch each day. Please see the lunch menu on the district website: https://www.schoolnutritionandfitness.com/webmenus2/#/view?id=5ff71d00534a13110c8b4580&siteCode=3369
You may bring a lunch and snack from home but please refrain from sending in nut products for the greater good of the school community. Students with allergies are asked to wash their hands with soap and water, before and after eating, rather than use hand sanitizer.
Special Subjects...Ms. Enghdahl, Ms. MacKessy, Mr. McGillicuddy, and Ms. Joos will be providing instruction in the general education classrooms or outside when feasible. PE will be held in the gym or outside. Special subjects will be delivered in-person for those in school, 50 minutes per day. Students learning remotely will participate in a 50 minute synchronous lesson daily.
Breakfast… We will not be serving breakfast in the classroom. Breakfast items will come home with students each afternoon for the next morning.
Recess… Students will stay with their class during recess and rotate through locations on the playground each week. (ie, play structure, swings, kickball/grass area, blacktop, and grassy area between the blacktop and structure). Students will be masked at recess unless they need a mask break. We will identify mask break locations at each space for mask breaks to occur at recess time.
Snack… We will continue to have our snack breaks outside weather permitting. Students will be distanced more than 6 ft to eat snack and can remove their mask since they will be seated in one location that is more than 6 ft from others.
During inclement weather, will divide the students up and have half of the students leave the classroom for snack break to ensure students are 6 feet apart while their masks are off.
Before and After School Childcare
We will not be providing before or after school childcare this school year through the Community Education Program. We anticipate before and after school childcare will resume in the fall for the 2021/22 school year.
Arrival and Dismissal Summary
Parent Drop Off:
Our goal is to get as many cars around to door #11 first so we do not have a backup on Billerica road and to keep a steady flow of traffic going around the building.
Please do not arrive at the school earlier than 8:25.
Once you pass the bus turn off we will have those caretakers dropping students in 2-4 flow through the back of the parking lot and stop before turning left toward the pods. A staff member will indicate when it is okay to proceed around the building. Please do not arrive earlier than 8:35. Please proceed around the building only after being directed to do so by a staff member. (Please see image in the document)
Those dropping off students in grades K and 1 only may go in front of the school and around the building to door #11. We will have signs posted to assist with this change.
Students can begin exiting vehicles at 8:45 when directed to do so by a staff member.
Please stay in one line and do not attempt to pass for the safety of our students. Many parents need to get out their cars to get our youngest students unbuckled and we do not have space for two lanes of traffic.
If possible, please have students exit on the passenger side so they are not going in front or behind cars.
Please ensure students are ready to exit the vehicle with their mask on and belongings in hand.
All 4th grade students and Ms. Pierce-Clarke’s, and Ms. Prevost’s classes will all exit their vehicles and enter into pod door number 3.
All 3rd grade students, Ms. Walker’s, Ms. DeRoeck’s, & Ms. Kelleher’s students will enter through cafeteria door number 6 and into the A or B wing.
All 1st and Kindergarten students will be dropped off at door number 11
Students needing support: A designated parking spaces will be allocated directly across from the kindergarten entrance doors (door #11) to help students who may need support exiting their vehicles. This is at the end of the drop off route and will be clearly marked with cones. Parents should remain in their cars. Staff members will be present to help them exit their cars & walk into the building
Pick Up
Dismissal begins at 3:00
Our goal is to get as many cars around to door #11 first so we do not have a backup on Billerica road and to keep a steady flow of traffic going around the building.
No parent parking. Please note that caretakers are no longer able to park their vehicle and walk into Center to pick their student(s).
Parent Pick Up:
All families are issued a number. Each family is issued two cards with their number. All parents or caretakers should display their issued card upon entering Center School’s main entrance. Students have a smaller coordinating card with their pick up number. The pick-up will follow the drop off direction. If a parent is going to change the pick-up protocol, an e-mail must be communicated to the teacher by 9:30 AM. Parents need to communicate with the students about their daily dismissal.
Please do not arrive at the school any earlier than 2:45 for pick up and no later than 3:18. We will begin dismissing students at 3:00.
If you are picking up only students in grades K, or 1 or in Ms. Walker, Ms. DeRoeck or Ms. Kelleher’s class, please arrive between 2:45 and 2:55 and a staff member will direct you to proceed in front of the school to door #11, once they have obtained your pick up number.
If you are picking up any students in Ms. Prevost, Ms. Pierce Clarke’s class or in grades 3, or 4, please do not arrive any earlier than 2:55. Once you pass the bus turn off we will have those caretakers picking students up from door #3, flow through the back of the parking lot and stop before turning left toward the pods. A staff member will indicate when it is okay to proceed around the building.
Once you have finished picking up your students, please turn your number over which indicates to staff that we do not need to assist any children to your car.
Thank you for reading this carefully and adhering to our drop off and pick up procedures. Following these instructions will ensure a safe and timely arrival and dismissal.
Sincerely,
Dianna and Donna
