We had a great 4-day week on campus and have had a blast finishing it off with some Valentine's Day parties! A big thank you to all of our room parents who help make that magic happen! Next week our 6th graders get to travel over to Granite Ridge and learn all about life as a middle schooler and we kick off spring sports with our first game day! Hope everyone has a wonderful 3-day weekend!

Thurgood Marshall was a lawyer for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1936. He worked on cases to defend innocent people, change laws, and integrate schools. He wanted all schools to be open to both African American students and white students. In 1954, the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the country, ruled on a case about an African American girl who was not allowed to attend an all-white school near her home. Thurgood told the judge that schools kept apart by race could never be considered equal. He said, “Equal means getting the same thing, at the same time and in the same place.” He won the case and changed the law.

Next, he became a judge. After that he worked for the White House. Then, in 1967 he became the first African-American justice of the Supreme Court. His rulings have helped people across the country.

Marlins, this week we’re asking: Who became the first African-American justice of the Supreme Court? Place one answer slip in a Cultural Corner box by the end of the school day this Thursday for your chance to win a prize. Your Student Council members will select 1 primary and 1 upper grade student from a raffle during Friday morning announcements.
