Message from Principal Nicole Pease

Dear DCS families,

Hello everyone, it was so lovely to see you all last Friday for our Harvest Supper/Open House. While it was a very long week, ending it with a celebration of all that is special of DCS was the best! I was so impressed with our lovely songs and that all students wanted to participate.

We had some fun this week with the arrival of 60 pumpkins to be carved! The Kindergarten/1st/2nd Graders had the most fun scooping out the pumpkin guts. They also drew faces to be carved by the older students. Under careful direction, the 3rd/4th/5th graders carved the pumpkins. Thanks to Jo-Ann Hopkins for coordinating, and to Erin Jadis, Lisa Budzik, and Karen Niemela for transporting all the treasures to Keene for the Pumpkin Festival this weekend.

Next week brings the Halloween Parade up to Yankee Magazine, a beloved tradition.

Have a wonderful weekend, Nicole

Fun in First and Kindergarten

Kindergarteners and first graders have been learning about retelling different parts of a story: Who are the characters? What is the setting? What happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story? Ask your child to retell the Big Pumpkin and The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.

Kindergarten students are continuing to practice counting objects to 10 as well as recognizing the number of fingers being held up. They are learning the meaning of more than, less than, and the same.

Smiling in Second Grade

Putting the garden to bed for the winter is an important job for second graders and Cornucopia. The students made seed bracelets from the dried seeds they collected from many plants in the garden. Many collected seeds in envelopes to keep for planting in the spring, and all second graders got to bring home the final remnants of our gardens.

In math, we've been working on using the number line to find benchmark numbers for both adding and subtracting. We are about to begin our study of place value. An extra treat has been using the Greg Tang website which has been an amazing challenge for all levels!

Thinking in Third Grade

The terrific Third Graders have been busy and working hard. They are having fun with their academics but also with special projects, such as learning to finger knit, making applesauce, building lanterns, and carving pumpkins! With the Zones of Regulation Curriculum, the children continued to talk about the different Zones and how they feel in each, moving into what they can do to be aware and self-regulate in each Zone. During Language Arts time, the students build, read, and spell words using vowel teams, focusing on the long /a/ sound. We are thinking about sequencing in stories, what happens in the beginning, middle, and end. Also, the children enjoy learning to write 2-column notes with the big idea and supporting details with the 4th and 5th Graders. From this exercise, they will practice writing a productive paragraph. For math, the children continue to learn about the meaning of multiplication, expressions, and symbols, looking at arrays and sets to illustrate multiplication. They are learning to become active and engaged learners in their math community through asking questions, appropriately responding, and listening to their peers’ ideas. For Social Studies, the class is starting our unit on maps/government and the history of the town of Dublin. They learned a simplified version of the US government and thought about what if the teacher was president or if they were the president.

Fabulous in Fourth and Fifth

We have greatly enjoyed the fall weather and activities! It was so exciting to see everyone at Open House and the students carved wonderful pumpkins for the Keene Pumpkin Festival.

We are moving right along in math. Both levels are multiplying numbers at the moment. 4th grade is multiplying numbers with powers of 10 and comparing that the the metrics system. 5th grade has learned the algorithm to use multiplication with numbers containing decimals.

In Science, the 4th grade has been studying Land and Water and used sugar cube to show how nature weathers rocks over time.

In 5th grade Science, we have been learning about the Science Safety and the Scientific Method. We grew grass in direct sunlight, indirect sunlight, and no light. It was very interesting to see the grass grow in the dark but not turn green. More learning to come!

This week in Wellness with Kelly Parker

Students in grades 2-5 continued to practice their throwing and catching skills, both underhand and overhand. They played pin knockdown, battleship, stinky feet, as well as freedom tag, fire and ice tag, and secret agent tag.

Students in grades 3-4 completed their first round of the PACER (progressive aerobic cardiovascular endurance run). They will set a goal for the spring when they complete it a second time.

Students in grades K/1 continued to practice locomotor movements, finding open space, learning about different pathways, and completing different animal walks. They played a fun game called scrambled eggs and dead bugs- ask your child to show you. So cute! Additionally, these students began learning about throwing and catching by completing scarf challenges and self-tossed ball challenges.

All grades talked about the mental/emotional section of the wellness wheel and how our emotions can impact our behavior. We discussed various strategies to help us navigate the various emotions.

We had a fun week in wellness! Thank you for your support!

DCS collects aluminum can tabs for "Tabs for Taylor"

Taylor is 15 years old and has been a patient at Shriners Hospital since birth. She has benefitted greatly by receiving prosthetics and her family gives back by collecting can tabs. The can tabs go to purchasing items for patient care. Taylor is the niece of Sarah Precourt (Mrs. Hopkin's daughter).

DCS has been collecting tabs for years and countless students and their families have contributed to this effort. Please send in any tabs from aliminum cans and we will add them to the collection. Thank you!
