How your Tiger can 'Stay In the Game' this school year ?

Every Minute Counts : Scholar Attendance and Learning Outcomes

As we continue our efforts to, 'Stay In The Game' Warrensville Heights City School District remains committed to rising above the expectations of previous years by leveling up in all areas, to include attendance. Last year Ohio Department of Education made changes to Ohio House Bill 96, that has a renewed focus on chronic absenteeism prevention instead of reactive measures to habitual truancy. This focus encourages districts to get in front of chronic absenteeism through family support, prevention and early intervention.

What does this mean for families?

The Ohio law states that "chronic absenteeism occurs after a student has missed 10 percent of the required instructional time during the school year regardless of the reason for their absence."

What contributes to chronic absenteeism ?

Absences whether excused or unexcused that equal or exceed 10 percent of instruction time contribute to chronic absenteeism.

tardy upon arrival
leaving school before dismissal

What is chronic absenteeism versus habitual truancy ?

Chronic absenteeism is :

Missing 2-3 school days per month or a total of 16 to 24 hours of missed instruction time

Habitual truancy as it pertains to unexcused absences ONLY as defined by Ohio law is :

30 or more consecutive hours (approximately 5 school days)
42 or more hours per month (approximately 7 school days)
72 or more hours per year (approximately 12 school days)

Warrensville Heights City School District is committed to working with families to ensure that our scholars are academically competitive critical thinkers that contribute their skills to community, nation and world. We are grateful for the support of our families and community as we pursue excellence in attendance, and continue to Stay In the Game!

A Peek at the Pride

Mrs. McDaniel's Classroom Paper Dart Paper Airplane Project

Students in Mrs. McDaniel's class designed their Basic Dart Paper Airplanes. They learned about variables and the importance of control. The variable in this experiment was the wingspan so all planes were designed based on the structure of a Basic Dart Paper Airplane - but each scholar had a different wingspan. We practiced measuring wingspan to the nearest 1/4 inch . Their launch line-up was based on wingspan- starting with the shortest wingspan (2 1/2 inches) and working our way to the widest wingspan (5 1/4 inches).

Over the next 3 weeks, each scholar will finalize their aircraft design and collect data via Google Sheets.

Before the official launch, scholars will make predictions about how differences in airplane dimensions—particularly wingspan—may affect flight performance. They will then test those predictions through a series of controlled flight trials. After each launch, scholars will measure the distance traveled and record the results. A strong experiment requires more than one data points, scholars will complete multiple trials and use the collected data to look for patterns, compare results, and evaluate whether the evidence supports their original hypotheses.

By the end of the unit, scholars will have used linear measurement, data collection, spreadsheets, variables and constants, repeated trials, prediction, and evidence-based reasoning within our aviation engineering challenge. Google Sheets will also provide opportunities for future discussions about averages, ranges, outliers, graphing, and which design features appear to contribute to longer flights.
