Esta fue una buena semana de aprendizaje y una semana aún mayor de perseverancia. Los estudiantes han estado terminando las evaluaciones para las boletas de calificaciones, que se enviarán a las familias el próximo viernes y la asamblea del Mes del Estudiante de hoy fue un gran recordatorio de por qué disfruto estar en James John.

La próxima semana los estudiantes no tendran escuela el lunes, día de planificación de maestros. El jueves por la noche es nuestra reunión de la PTA con dos invitados especiales de visita, siga leyendo. Para nuestras familias latinas: el viernes es nuestra Hora de Café a partir de las 8:15 am en la cafetería. La Latina Network de Portland nos visitará. Además, no se olvide de nuestra limpieza del terreno: sábado 3 de febrero.

Nuestra celebración del Black History Month se acerca rápidamente y si no pudo asistir el año pasado (fue un gran evento), esperamos continuar la tradición aquí en la escuela primaria James John y hacer crecer la celebración. Si desea ser voluntario durante la celebración, por favor Registrate aquí o más abajo en la sección de voluntarios.

Dear James John Families,

To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi, “ Well hello there.”

This was a good week of learning and an even greater week of perseverance. Students have been wrapping up assessments for report cards, which will be going out to families next Friday and today’s Student of Month assembly was a great reminder about why I enjoy being at James John.

Next week students will not be having school on Monday - teacher planning day. Thursday evening is our PTA meeting with two special guests visiting, please read on. For our Latino Families - Friday is our Hora de Café starting at 8:15 am in the cafeteria - Latino Network of Portland will be visiting. Also, don’t forget about our Grounds Clean up - Saturday February 3rd.

Our Black History Month celebration quickly approaches and If you did not get to attend last year - it was quite the event - we look forward to continuing the tradition here at James John Elementary and growing the celebration. If you would like to volunteer during the celebration please sign up here or below in the volunteer section.

Lastly, if you know of families that have young ones that will begin school next fall - Registration for 2024-25 Kindergarten starts March 1st. Please read on.

There are only a couple weeks left before our Black History Celebration, Friday 2/16 and we will be ordering shirts again like last year. This order form is if you would like to order a shirt for yourself or a family member.

***ALL James John students will receive a free shirt so no need to order for them!!***

Since we are so close to the event and need time to order the shirts we CAN NOT take orders after this Sunday 1/28. We will have a couple extra at the event but not very many so if you would like one please make sure to get your order in as soon as possible. Shirts do not have the year on them this time and our hope is they will be able to be worn again next year.

Solo quedan un par de semanas antes de nuestra Celebración de la Historia Afroamericana, el viernes 16 de febrero, y volveremos a pedir camisetas como el año pasado. Este formulario de pedido es si desea pedir una camisa para usted o un miembro de su familia.

The January PTA meeting has been rescheduled for February 1st 6-7:30pm!

There won't be another PTA meeting until April, so come find out what is happening around James John! There will be pizza, childcare and interpretation available.

We will have two important guests talking with us this month:

• We are excited to welcome our former James John Elementary Principal, Dr. John Melvin. Dr. Melvin is now the Senior Director of Schools for PPS and oversees the K-5 elementary schools feeding into Roosevelt and Cleveland High Schools. Dr. Melvin will be coming to our meeting to discuss with us the hiring process for a permanent principal at James John. Families will receive a formal invite from Dr. Melvin early next week.

• As you may know, our current Principal, Martin Castillo, was appointed by PPS as "Interim Principal" last summer as there was not time to hold a traditional "Community Input Meeting" or a "Staff Input Meeting" before the principal hiring.

• At our meeting next Thursday, Feb. 1st, Dr. Melvin will describe the principal hiring process and will ask us to share our vision of the ideal James John school leader (characteristics and traits). Dr. Melvin and his assistant will record this input. A community and staff input session is a required step in the PPS Principal hiring process as well. After this session, Dr. Melvin will clarify next steps. Please join us on Thursday to give your input!

• We will also welcome Kim Stockstad, our school Climate Specialist. Kim will be talking about our James John Core Values! Kim would like parent input on finding 3-5 words that represent our learning community values: who we are as a group of staff, students and families. Please come learn how to share your ideas!
