⏰ A Friendly Reminder for CLI Families
Please make sure your students are at school and through the doors by 8:40 a.m. when the doors close. Every minute of instructional time counts, and we want our kiddos to have every opportunity to learn and grow!
If you arrive after 8:40 a.m., please park and walk your student into the office so you can sign them in.
We are also using the Safe Schools Kiosk when students are being signed out early. Please be patient with us as we continue to learn and perfect the new system. We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we work to make arrival and dismissal as smooth as possible!
Thank you for helping us make every minute count! 🐯💛🖤
Connections to HOME
3rd grade Math — Place Value
Goal: Understand hundreds, thousands, and the value of each digit.
At-home ideas:
Build a Number: Give your child 4 digits and have them make the largest and smallest numbers possible.
Mystery Number: “I have a 6 in the hundreds place, a 3 in the tens place, and a 9 in the ones place. What am I?”
Expanded Form: Pick numbers from receipts, addresses, sports scores, etc., and have students write them in expanded form.
Compare It: Which is greater: 4,382 or 4,328? Have your child explain why.
Math — Multiplication Facts
Goal: Build automatic recall of basic facts.
Practice 5 minutes a day rather than one long session.
Use flashcards—but have students explain a fact they don’t know using a related fact.
Example: 6 × 7 → “I know 5 × 7 = 35, so one more 7 makes 42.”
Look for multiplication in real life:
“There are 4 plates with 6 cookies each. How many cookies?”
Play Fact Family games with multiplication/division.
Practice skip counting while driving or walking
Math — Place Value
Goal: Understand larger numbers and compare/round numbers.
At-home ideas:
Number of the Day: Pick a 5- or 6-digit number.
Write it in standard form.
Expanded form.
Word form.
Identify the value of each digit.
Round it to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000.
Estimate the Receipt: Look at a grocery receipt and estimate the total before calculating.
Which Is Greater? Give two large numbers and have your child compare them using >, <, or =.
4th grade Math — Multiplication Facts
By 4th grade, encourage fluency, not just memorization.
Try:
Beat Your Score: 1-minute fact practice, but focus on improving their own score—not competing with someone else.
Fact Detective: Give a difficult fact and ask, “What fact do you already know that can help?”
Array Hunt: Find groups/arrays around the house.
Eggs in a carton
Windows
Chairs
Tile
Real-Life Multiplication: “Four people each need 7 tickets. How many tickets?
5th grade Math
Math — Place Value
Goal: Apply place-value understanding to larger numbers, decimals, and operations.
At-home ideas:
Decimal Detective: Use prices at the grocery store.
Which is greater: $3.49 or $3.94?
What is the value of the 9?
Number Challenge: Give a number such as 45,672.308 and ask:
What is the value of the 6?
What is the value of the 3?
Round it to the nearest hundred.
Write it in expanded form.
Estimate First: Before solving a problem, have students estimate the answer.
Math — Multiplication Facts
For 5th graders, connect facts to larger multiplication problems.
Example:
7 × 8 = 56
Then ask:
70 × 8 = ?
700 × 8 = ?
7 × 80 = ?
This helps students understand that multiplication facts aren’t just something to memorize—they are connected to place value.
Also:
Play Multiplication War with playing cards.
Give 2-digit × 1-digit problems and have them estimate first.
Ask students to explain how they know an answer is reasonable.

Note from Mrs. Arthur
A Note from Mrs. Arthur 🍂
October is here, and I love this time of year because it reminds us that growth takes time. At CLI, we are watching our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders grow every day—not just academically, but also in confidence, independence, responsibility, and how they treat others.
Our kiddos are learning to take on challenges, make mistakes, try again, and celebrate their progress. Sometimes growth is big and easy to see, and sometimes it happens in small moments that may go unnoticed. Every step matters!
As we move through this school year, I encourage our students to keep being curious, keep working hard, and keep believing in themselves. We are so proud of the growth we are already seeing, and I can't wait to see where this adventure takes us next!
Thank you to our families for partnering with us and to our amazing CLI staff for helping our students grow each and every day.
Keep growing, keep learning, and keep adventuring, CLI! 🐯🍁
