The Cohasset Compass
Ever Onward ~ Moving Our Schools Into the Future
December 5, 2025
Dear Cohasset Public Schools Community,
Attendance in school matters. School and classroom learning experiences are designed to capitalize on interactions between and among teachers and students. When a student is not in class, they miss the intentional learning experience the teacher has designed for them. The adage "we can't teach an empty seat" is real and, increasing student attendance is a priority for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and to our schools and district.
As we head into a season where our schools historically see increased student dismissals and absences, especially on Fridays and Mondays, we want to emphasize that routinely missing 2 to 5 hours of school every Friday for 10 weeks could result in a child missing between 20 - 50 hours of instruction. This has the potential to result in 3 to 9 days of learning for that child in only two and a half months. This, by DESE standards, could qualify as chronic absenteeism.
When children are routinely out of the classroom, they and their contributions to the learning and social interactions are missed in their community. Routine dismissals and absences also make it difficult for our teachers to plan lessons that are meaningful and impactful for the remaining students and to catch students up once they return. Research tells us that:
- "Students who were more frequently absent in any year of elementary school demonstrated lower academic, executive function, and socioemotional outcomes" (Ansari & Gottfried, 2021).
- "A one-day increase in absences in a given grade in a given school decreases math scores by 0.02 standard deviations (Goodman, 2014), and
- “Students with moderate to chronic absenteeism start the next year significantly behind academically (King et al., 2019).
Recently, staff attendance has also been in the news because it, along with student attendance, is a DESE priority. Though school districts have always reported staff attendance data to DESE as part of our year end reports, this is the first time DESE has released staff attendance data publicly by district.
For this report, DESE defined an absence as missing more than half of the workday for a reason that falls outside of paid school vacation time or district-approved professional development activities - this means they counted sick days, bereavement, school business days, and long term leaves like parental leaves, medical leaves, etc. The data DESE released was aggregated; they will not be publishing individual data.
Our data regarding staff attendance (see photo below) is excellent. If you look at our data compared to both the state data and other local districts, our staff attendance rates are the highest of our neighboring communities. This, in my opinion, reiterates the professionalism, dedication, and care our teachers bring to their work each and every day. Given that, we are asking for your continued partnership to help us ensure that our teachers aren't teaching to empty seats, even on Fridays during the winter.
Ever Onward,
Sarah
CPS Strategic Plan Spotlight: Elevating Teacher Leadership
Our new strategic plan challenges us to learn, grow, and be inspired - together. It also sets a goal to build opportunities for teacher leadership within the district and to more intentionally design meaningful professional learning opportunities for staff. To move us toward these goals, the rejuvenated professional learning committee is planning a teacher-led professional development day that will be held on Monday, December 22. We are very excited about this day where our theme is Balance and Belonging - the morning is focused on strategies teachers, at all grade levels and in a variety of content areas, can use in their classrooms and the afternoon is focused on student and teacher wellness and wellbeing. In all, 35 educators are creating workshops that will be offered to their colleagues. We are excited about the day and are grateful to the teachers who will be facilitating the learning experiences and the professional learning committee for their work planning the day.
CPS Strategic Plan Spotlight: Wicked Wellness and Belonging
Thanks to a generous grant from the Boston Bridges Initiative, the Inclusivity Club and Black Student Union spent the day together at a screening of Wicked: For Good at South Shore Cinemas. The outing continued over lunch at Tavern in the Square, where BSU members guided an open discussion on what inclusion and diversity look like within our school community. The event offered a meaningful opportunity for connection and shared learning between both groups.
CPD and CHS Students Are RAD!
In late October/early November, our School Resource Officers, Greg Taylor and Grey Lowrance, and Detective Julie Hall, offered a RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) class to our senior health classes. This course, since it's inception, has been very well received by our students who leave feeling more prepared as they start to consider their life beyond Cohasset High School. We are grateful that our partnership between our CPD and Ms. Megnia allows us to provide this opportunity to our students.
What Expertise Can YOU Offer Our Students?
Cohasset is a community comprised of experts in a wide variety of fields. In order to deliver more authentic, hands-on, project-based learning experiences to students, the Cohasset School Committee, in collaboration with district leadership, is working to develop a "Community Resource Guide." This Guide will serve as an invaluable resource to our classroom teachers and school staff, as it will provide them with a comprehensive database of all stakeholders and interested parties who are willing to share their background, experience, and expertise in furtherance of our mission to Empower Students to Improve Communities.
There are many different ways in which one might participate in this endeavor, including classroom presentations, hosting or facilitating field trips, creating shadow or internship opportunities, or assisting with project-based learning experiences.
If you are willing to share your unique talents, passions, interests, and/or expertise, please click this link to fill out a brief interest form. We thank you for your willingness to volunteer your time in order to deliver impactful learning experiences to CPS students.
Onward and Upward,
Your School Committee
