NOAA Planet Stewards Book Club
This enrichment will allow you to participate in the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) book club, with environmental books that will help you become a better steward of our planet. Activities will be tracked through Beanstack. You have a choice of which books to read and which author events to attend. However, the author event you attend should reflect the book you read. There will be text responses within Beanstack and you will earn digital badges to track your progress. The book club discussion dates are set in stone and cannot and will not be changed as they are set by NOAA and we have no control over them. These are the upcoming dates:
January 9, 2024 - Fragment by Craig Russell (Fiction)
February 13, 2024 - Engage, Connect, and Protect: Empowering Diverse Youth as Environmental Leaders by Angelou Ezeilo (Non-Fiction)
March 12, 2024 - The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science is Still a Boys' Club by Eileen Pollack (Non-Fiction)
April 9, 2024 - Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism by Aja Barber (Non-Fiction)
May 14, 2024 - Fen, Bog & Swamp: A Short History of Peatland Destruction and Its Role in the Climate Crisis by Annie Proulx (Non-Fiction)
Anytime:
Escape Undersea by Ellen Prager (Fiction)
There's Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities by Ingrid R. G. Waldron (Non-Fiction)
You would need to read 4 books (your choice) and do the corresponding 4 activities. All of it is in Beanstack. That is the minimum to get the enrichment. You need to set the Beanstack timer to track your reading minutes. You cannot just randomly type in minutes. This way your days spent reading and your timer will be the proof of your 20 hour enrichment commitment. Mrs. Janek will Google Meet (or in-person meet) with you if you want help with the Beanstack app.

2nd - you can get them through Inter-Library Loan from any library in Michigan and delivered to your public library (you must have a valid public library card). Click link below to go to MeL.org This is a FREE service.
3rd - you can buy them through links on the NOAA site (or Amazon.com)
Engage, Connect, Protect is available as an eBook through our EBSCO database
The Reading Challenge Enrichment is set up on Beanstack
You need to be able to use Beanstack to track your books, and complete the activities. The author visits/book discussions will be through GoogleMeet and are hosted by NOAA.
2 of the books can be done at any time because they do not require an author visit/book club discussion. They will have reflection questions to answer and a few other activities.
Mrs. Janek will be the teacher responsible for this enrichment
