Week 13: Back to the Basics — Mastering the Lesson Cycle
Every single day when our students walk through the door, it is game day. There is no time to lose. We have officially reached November, which means we have only six weeks left in Semester 1—and only five weeks until Common Assessment #2 (SMC #2). Every minute of Tier 1 instruction counts, and our students cannot afford a single wasted opportunity.
To maximize student growth and accelerate achievement, we are going back to the basics by tightening our execution of the foundational Lesson Cycle: I Do, We Do, You Do. This cycle is not new—decades of educational research prove that when implemented with high fidelity and intentionality, it guarantees student mastery.
The Three Phases of Tier 1 Excellence
1. The "I Do" — Direct Modeling & Explicit Instruction (~15–20 Minutes)
This is your prime instructional window. Tier 1 success starts with intentional preparation:
Think Alouds: Unpack the standard explicitly. Verbalize your thought process so students understand how and why you approach the problem or text.
Visual Anchors: Build and reference clear anchor charts, graphic organizers, and multi-sensory supports.
Active Engagement: Keep students hooked from minute one with purposeful choral responses, turn-and-talks, and checks for understanding.
2. The "We Do" — Guided Practice, Active Facilitation & High Energy
The "We Do" is where guided learning turns into student ownership. It requires high visibility, active movement, and energetic facilitation:
Model the Practice: Continue to visibly model steps alongside students as they tackle parallel problems, breaking complex processes down in real time.
Walk the Room & Aggressively Monitor: Don't stay behind the podium—walk the room with intentionality. Pre-plan your monitoring laps using our Feedback for Learning tracker, annotating live on papers and catching misconceptions immediately.
Create an Engaging Atmosphere: Bring high energy! Foster a vibrant, collaborative environment where students are motivated to talk through solutions, debate with peers, and celebrate small wins.
Peer Collaboration: Provide structured opportunities for students to verbalize their thinking and defend their answers before working solo.
3. The "You Do" — Independent Practice & Demonstration of Mastery
This is where students demonstrate what they truly own:
Independent Application: Students complete aligned, rigorous tasks without scaffolding to prove mastery of the day’s learning objective.
The Exit Ticket: Collect daily, verifiable evidence of learning to drive your next-day small group intervention and reteach plans.
Preparation Precedes Performance
Before you step into your classroom each morning, your lesson must be internalized from start to finish:
What is my explicit model?
What questions will I ask to probe deeper thinking?
What will I look for during my laps in the "We Do"?
How will students show me they mastered the objective during the "You Do"?
Modeling every step, thinking aloud, annotating live, questioning with rigor, and creating collaborative academic talk are the hallmarks of great teaching. Everything matters, and intentionality wins every time.
Let’s lock in, execute the cycle with fidelity, and make every minute count for our learners!
"Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
— Will Durant (on the philosophy of Aristotle)

Say Something Anonymous Reporting System
Under the new state requirements outlined in HB 1481, students no longer have access to their cell phones during the school day. To ensure that everyone still has a safe and accessible way to report concerns, the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System is now available through Clever.
This system empowers students and staff to confidentially report concerns related to:
Safety threats
Bullying or harassment
Individuals who may need help
Reports can be made anytime, from any device—even outside the school day.
Even though it may still feel like summer, Dallas ISD has returned to its business dress code.
