Letter from the 'Editor'

Hello LSSPs,

It is back to school and boy has it started off with a bang.

I know many of you are already deep into the work: attending meetings, planning evaluations, trying to figure out a student's schedule so you can get them for testing, trying to figure out how long you can work in the closet/server room that they let you use on campus before you pass out from heat stroke.

While I know you have plenty on your plate already, be sure to try and squeeze in some time for some personal goal setting for this school year. The beginning of the year is the time to work out your vision for where you want to grow and expand yourself as an educator, professional, and person. Lewis Carroll told us that "If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there", so find that destination point, and pick the route that will get you there. If you need some help, consider me your GPS and ask. One of my goals for this year is to pursue more ways to be helpful to the individual LSSPs in Region 10 (Tier 3 support if you will), so please contact me with your questions, comments ,or calls for consultation.

I hope everyone has started off the year School Psych'd,

Keya Saleh, LSSP, NCSP

good reading in september

We Know Brad's Wife - She Got Fired From The Cracker Barrel

Alice Keeler writes a fun article about how to look at ways to use technology and collaboration to improve student engagement with the most dreaded of lessons - Fractions! Not a math teacher? Read it anyway to stretch your thinking on relevant instruction.

Kindness Vs. Cruelty: Helping Kids Hear The Better Angels Of Their Nature

NPR article about the complicated nature of kindness and the barriers to empathy.

Anxiety Disorders and Risk for Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts

The Relationship Between Anxiety Disorders and Suicide Attempts

A pair of journal articles (NIH and JAMA) discussing the results of studies looking at the relationship between Anxiety Disorders and Suicide Ideation and Attempts.

keya's book club

I have always gotten a lot of questions about the books I am reading (mostly because approximately 84% of my sentences start with "you know I just read this book..."), so I decided to start sharing some of my personal favorites that I have recently read (or in some cases, reread).

This month: When the Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Dan Pink. This 'When-To' book shares some really interesting ideas that have made me stop, think and question things in a way few books in recent memory have. You can find it wherever books are sold, lended, or e-printed.

Update on ethics and diversity trainings

As many of you have noticed or emailed about, there has been a rapid response to the Ethics and Diversity sessions posted. In order to help meet demand, we have taken a few steps:

1. We have found bigger locations and increased the number of seats in the trainings.

2. We have added an additional date for both trainings (1/29/2020)

We hope this will help alleviate some of the anxiety and concern some of you have been experiencing. :)

final call for lssp plc 2019-20

nasp webinar - addressing microaggressions in pk-12 settings

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) will be hosting a webinar by Dr. Celeste Malone on Microagressions in the School Setting on September 25th. This is a great opportunity to pick up some CPD while learning more about how to take action against a challenging issue.

More information on the Webinar can be found here!

Region 10 Training Offerings

In an attempt to get information more organized, I am moving toward a Google Sheet for listing out upcoming training sessions here ta Region 10 that would be of interest to LSSPs.

This link will take you to the live spreadsheet. Check out the list every month to see what new offerings are coming up at Region 10.

Getting to know you

One of my biggest goals of GSP is to get information about our LSSPs. I know your time is valuable and I don't want to ask you to spend half a day filling out tons of information, so I have settled on what I am calling the Two-ish Question Quiz. Every so often, I humbly ask for you to answer two questions about yourself to help us get a better picture of the LSSPs in Region 10.
