2nd Quarter Update
Gahanna Middle School East
Dear 8th grade Families,
As we begin the second quarter, we are re-implementing and/or reminding students of some important policy updates to ensure a positive and productive learning environment. Please review the following reminders:
- Phones, Smart Watches, and AirPods: These must be put away during class.
- Hallway and Bathroom Behavior: No food in hallways; SMART PASSES must be used responsibly when students are leaving the classroom. There has been an uptick in bathroom complaints and issues!
- Tardies: Consequences will apply for repeated tardiness.
The book signature policy involves tracking student behavior through "signatures" for infractions. Infractions include but are not limited to the misuse of Chromebook/classroom materials, tardies to class, out of class past the allotted smart pass time, having an uncharged Chromebook, not having your Chromebook, using disrespectful language, inappropriate hallway behavior, being unprepared for class, and not following directions/expectations.
After every third signature, a student receives a detention. If the student fails to attend detention, they will be assigned Saturday School. Additionally, if a student accumulates a third detention, that will result in Saturday School. The system resets at the semester, providing students a fresh start.
This policy aims to reinforce accountability while allowing for regular resets, giving students an opportunity to improve behavior. Parents will be notified on an as needed basis for signatures, and then via email for every detention assigned.
This is also a friendly reminder that students with too many behavior infractions may not qualify to attend the Washington DC trip. The following disciplinary consequences are considered when planning for the trip (see previous DC communication from Michael Hunt): in-school restriction, Saturday School, and out-of-school suspension.
Let’s work together to ensure a successful and respectful school environment! Please click here to see the google slides that were presented to students on Wednesday, October 24, 2024.
Take care,
Megan Kirsten
