Happy New Year from MS 50!

Welcome to a new year at MS 50! We hope the Winter Recess was restful and relaxing for all. January is College Awareness Month, a chance for students to begin to discover the joys and the power of a college education and how it can fit into their futures. Events this year will include a college student panel, college SWAG day, an advisory door decorating contest, and much more! Next week Monday, 8th Grader Lola S-L will be representing MS 50 at SoapboxNYC! She will be joining 400 students and teachers from around the city to share 2 minute speeches on what they believe is the most important issue facing their community and what we can all do to fix it. Join us in cheering on Lola!

6th Grade -A Balanced Biosphere

In 6th grade Science, students are exploring the impact of natural processes and human activities on the ecosystems that we see in the world today. Our students will participate in hands-on labs and activities to deepen their understanding of the unique nature of Earth's ecosystems through investigations related to geologic features, essential natural resources and the interaction between plants and animals.

7th Grade - Matter Matters

In 7th Grade Science, students are investigating how models of matter can help us understand the resources that we use. Students explore the human reliance on resources from our surrounding ecosystems. In this unit of study students will learn that these natural resources are limited, in high demand, and not always equally available to people around the world.

8th Grade - Characteristics of Life

In 8th grade Science, students are engaging in Regents level, hands-on labs designed to help gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of life on Earth. Students will explore the idea that all living things share a set of unique characteristics and processes that define life. While reviewing basic laboratory and microscopy techniques, students will explore the similarities and differences between cell types. Deeply investigating different domains and kingdoms of life allows for an introduction to the history of life on Earth, common ancestry, and evolution, which are key concepts that will be tested on the Living Environment Regents in June.
