What Do Great Coaches Do?

OK, I admit it. I am a college football junkie. I love watching the games on Saturdays and I love watching what good coaches do. Parents and teachers are also coaches and they make a huge difference in our children. What do great coaches do and what can we learn from them? 1. They know what works for all players. They value the importance of practice. They encourage players to care well for their bodies. They understand clearly the nature of the game and the rules to follow. They prepare meticulously and study their opponents. They secure the best resources possible to help their players. They lean on the expertise of other great coaches. They take responsibility and ownership for doing all they can to ensure their team's success. They own their mistakes and learn from them. They prioritize their players over themselves. These same choices are important for us as we lead all of our children. 2. They know what works for each player. Great coaches understand the nature and needs of the individuals around them. They know that some players need a little different kind of coaching than other players. Some need different resources or strategies or equipment. Coaches assess well the strengths and weaknesses of their players and they know how to help them take the "just right" next step. They celebrate the individual growth of their athletes as much as the overall wins of the team. They care well for each player and not just the superstars. As parents and teachers, we must know well each of the little ones in our care.

As we watch our favorite sport, I hope we will listen to the stories about the influence of the coaches. Coaches have an incredible impact on players and we want to provide that same kind of influence on the children in our family and classrooms. I hope that we can allow others to continue "coaching us" as we coach our little ones. Thank you for being a constant source of support for your child and our school.

Strength and Blessings,

Mr. Maness
