News & Notes from the Principal
Happy Homecoming Friday DKMS families!!! We had a school spirit filled week here in the middle school!
A big shout out to our student council led by Mrs. Lebeck. Our student council did a phenomenal job putting together our pep assembly. It was great to hear from our band, see our kids participate in some games (good job 6th grade!!!), and recognize our students who are participating in fall sports. It truly was a great day to be a Panther!!!
Next week, students will begin using our Securly Digital Pass. They will be learning more about it on Monday. I wanted to review the change in our Out of Class Pass Policy, which can be found in the DKMS Student Handbook on our district website:
Students are expected to use passing time to use the restroom or go to their locker. In an effort to maximize instructional time we will be limiting the amount of passes during classes to the following:
5th grade: 7 passes per week
6th grade: 6 passes per week
7th grade: 5 passes per week
8th grade: 5 passes per week
Students' pass usage will be monitored digitally through Securly Digital Pass. When a student needs to leave during class they will ask for permission from the teacher and fill out the digital pass. When a student has used all of their out of class passes for the week they will not be allowed to leave the room during class. Passes during a student's lunch time will not count against their weekly pass limit.
NOTE: DKMS will follow all medical, behavioral, or IEP plans that address an increased need for a student to leave the classroom.
Also, next week we will begin offering Success Center. Success Center is a great place for students to get extra tutoring, work on homework, and work on missing assignments. Success Center will be from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays Success Center will be in Mrs. Estep's class in room 18. Different teachers may be hosting Thursdays' Success Center and students will be alerted to where they need to report. If your child is coming to Success Center, you will need to pick them up at 4:00 pm.
Wednesday October 1, 2025 is count day in the state of Michigan. It is very important students attend school regularly and it is especially important they attend on Wednesday because our school funding is based on our attendance numbers on and around count day.
Finally, if you have not gotten a login and password for PowerSchool, please contact the middle school office at (269) 623-1540. PowerSchool is a great place for you to see your child's academic progress. You can track their grades, missing assignments, and test scores on the website.
As always, I would like to thank our students, staff, families, and community for their hard work and support. Homecoming week is always full of great energy and school spirit. It is also a reminder that we have completed a month of school and time is flying by! Have a great weekend and GO PANTHERS!
It's a great day to be a PANTHER!
Thank you,
Bobby TillmanPrincipal

Never Forget: Poems from 7th Grade
Although September 11 has passed, our 7th grade students wrote poems to honor and remember the day. Some students wanted to share their work, and we’ll be featuring those poems each week in the newsletter. These poems were created in Mrs. Ferguson’s and Mrs. Podolan’s classes. We look forward to sharing a few each week until all have been shared with our school community.
I failed (In remembrance of the Twin Towers)
By: Maci Osborne
If only I had been strong enough
To keep you safe and protect you.
I should’ve pushed those planes down
And held myself up.
If only this tragedy hadn’t happened
Everyone would be ok.
We would’ve all grown up and continued our lives
And none of us would feel pain.
If only people didn’t have such dark thoughts
The world would be a better place.
But there's always that one person or people
That ruins it for everyone.
If only…
By: Kylie Lake
If only…
If only
We could go back and just
Rewind
The past
That day
Was…Traumatic
Hurt people, fires
Collapsing
No one
Wanted this
The pain, the fires
The world just… collapsed
If only we could
Change the past
If only we could have known
If we could've seen
It coming
We could've prevented it
From the world
To save the people
If only
The world was safe again

Bringing Medication to School? Read This First
Hello DK Families,
Welcome back to school! There are important updates for students taking medication at school. A new medication policy went into place in July 2025. The biggest change impacting your middle school student is around emergency medications, such inhalers and EpiPens. If your student needs to carry their inhaler or Epi-Pen, it is required to have the parent and the physician give written permission by checking the box on the medication form. Another option, especially for young students, is to keep the emergency medication in the office. It is important to remember all medications used at school will require a medication administration form completed by the health prescriber (linked below).
This form requires parent signature and student physician's signature, along with dosage and administration instructions. New forms must be completed every year. Any medication must be brought to the school office by an adult and in the original bottle or container.
Please be sure to accurately fill out the new or returning student registration for your child/children, including any medical concerns, updated contact information, and updated physician information. This is important for the first day of school to be safe for your child when they arrive.
Below you will find a list of school needs for some of the most common health conditions:
Any Medications Taken During School Hours:
Medication in the original bottle/prescription bottle.
Signed Medication Consent Form
All Prescription Medications must have a physician’s and parent signature
Self-Carry Medications
Allowed to self carry medications per district policy are emergency medications such as inhalers or EPI Pens and permission from both the parent and physician must be marked on prescription medication form.
Severe Allergies:
EPI Pen and/or Benadryl with Medication Consent Forms
Allergy Action Plan
Asthma:
Inhaler with Medication Const Form
Asthma Action Plan from the physician
Seizures
Emergency Seizure medications with medication consent form
Seizure Action plan from physician
Other Life Threatening medical conditions (example: Bleeding disorders)
Action Plan from the physician
Any medications needed for medical condition with medication consent form
Diabetes
Diabetes Medical Management Plan from physician and signed by parent
Please reach out with any questions. We look forward to a great school year!
