I hope everyone had a restful and warm extended weekend. We will have a chilly start to this week and I ask your assistance in ensuring that our Coyotes are still in attendance daily.

This week our students will given an NWEA MAP assessment. NWEA MAP Growth is a nationally normed, standardized achievement test. NWEA tests are important to teachers because they help to keep track of student progress and growth in basic skills. Kohlberg Elementary teachers and staff will use this information to help guide instruction in the classroom and targeted intervention.

Hoping everyone stays warm and safe this week.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Growing in Emotional Intelligence

In my role as your child's school counselor it is part of my responsibility and privilege to go to each classroom every month to provide lessons and activities that help children to grow in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies. I have shared with you that we use a curriculum called Core Essential Values that features a "Word of the Month" each month and "The Big Three--Treat Others Right, Make Smart Decisions, Maximize Your Potential." This is one of my favorite parts of my job.

All of the lessons that I do each month are designed to help our students grow in the five SEL Competencies. There is quite a bit of research that shows the link between strong SEL skills and high academic achievement.

See the image below of the SEL Competencies Wheel.

They are color coded. Self-awareness and self-management are how we understand and control ourselves. Social awareness and relationship skills are about how we understand and relate to others. Responsible decision-making involves both personal and social areas, because our decisions affect us personally and can also affect others. If you are interested in further information, you can learn more at https://casel.org/fundamentals-of-sel/what-is-the-casel-framework/

GT Information

Potential GT students were tested this past week. However, we will not be getting scores or know who qualified until Mid-March/April. This is a new test so things are taking awhile. Thank you for your patience.
