Welcome to Smore! Welcome to Smore!

We're Upgrading to the Smore Newsletter Format!

We’re excited to share that we are transitioning to the Smore newsletter format for our monthly communications. This will be our second official newsletter using Smore, and we are looking to continue using it for the foreseeable future!

This new format will provide a web-accessible newsletter that is easy to read on any device, including your phone. Links will be simple to click, photos will display clearly, and information will be organized in a user-friendly layout.

The newsletter will be distributed:

  • Via 4-HOnline as a web link delivered through email
  • Posted on our website for convenient access at any time

A printed version will continue to be available. However, please note that the printed copy will include the newsletter articles and information only and will not reflect the visual design or enhanced formatting of the online version. It is not a print friendly version, so please expect articles to cut on one page and carry onto the other if receiving a mailed version.

We are excited about this update and hope it makes staying connected and informed even easier for you!

Join Our Remind!

We are starting a Colfax County 4-H Remind Group. Remind is an app that anyone can download and join! Please join the group using the following steps:

Steps to join Remind:

1. Download the Remind App on your phone

2. Create an account within Remind

3. In the menu on the left hand side of the screen, select Add Class

4. Select "Join Existing Class"

5. Join the group in the app using the class code @ colfaxco4h

We will use remind to send updates, reminders, and any other tips. While you are not required to download and join the app, it will be helpful to all 4-H families. We encourage parents, youth, and volunteers to join the group. Youth are also able to join this group. Within Remind, we are able to send mass messages to our 4-H families all across the county, but group members will not be able to message one another through the app. This creates a safe, electronic environment for everyone to be a part of, without worry of unwanted contact. You will be able to message owners of the Remind group with any questions, but not general group members.

Please reach out with any questions!

Colfax County 4-H Members Interested in the 2026 PASE Livestock Judging Contest

Colfax County 4-H members who are interested in competing in the Premier Animal Science Event (PASE) Livestock Judging Contest should carefully read and understand the following information before registering.

Colfax County may enter up to two teams (four members per team) in the Nebraska 4-H PASE Livestock Judging Contest within each age division (junior, intermediate, and senior). If more than four individuals register within any of the age divisions, determination of team members will be made by a consulted expert in 2026 based upon selection criteria they develop and share with both a 4-H Council representative and the 4-H Educator. Youth wishing to participate in the Nebraska 4-H PASE Livestock Judging Contest, but are not selected for a team will still have the opportunity to attend and participate as an individual participant.

County contest scores will be considered as criteria with team selection, and participants may also be asked to take part in a virtual competition to better assist in determining final team placement.

If you would like to compete on a livestock judging team at PASE, please fill out the following google form by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22nd so that we can begin make arrangements for team selection. Notifications will be sent to all who fill out the form regarding if there are enough individuals to make up teams, and/or what the continued team selection process will look like.

4-H NEW FOR 2026 4-H NEW FOR 2026

Registration of Registered & Purebred Animals

A copy of registration paperwork must be turned into the Extension Office with ID Sheets prior to the Colfax County Fair. Animals without proper registration paperwork will be shown in commercial/crossbred classes.

REGISTRATION OF LIVESTOCK – A breeding or market animal to be eligible for show in a registered (purebred) class must be owned by the exhibitor by June 15 of the current year and be registered by the official breed association. The registration certificate must show (1) the name of the exhibitor (2) the name of the exhibitor and/or a co-owner who is an immediate member of the exhibitor’s family. REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED BY FAIR DATE. Immediate family is defined as members of a household, including parents, brothers and sisters, and youth in care of the head of the household.

Swine Tags

**NEW FOR 2026** This year, swine entered in Colfax County 4-H are required to have a County 4-H ear tag OR an EID tag placed in the ear. Ear notches are no longer a solely viable form of identification. 4-H and EID swine tags can be purchased in the office. County fair only 4-H tags are $3, and EID tags are $4 (EID tags are required if showing at state fair).

DNA Envelopes

**NEW FOR 2026** State fair and AKSARBEN Stock Show DNA envelopes are no longer the same. Instead, DNA must be submitted in two separate envelopes. State fair DNA envelopes can be picked up and must be submitted back to the extension office by June 15. If you are planning on showing at the AKSARBEN Stock Show, you must order your own DNA envelopes through the order https://www.aksarbenstockshow.com/p/livestock-show/dna-orders. Visit the AKSARBEN Stock Show website for more information.

Clothing Entries

**NEW FOR 2026** Youth will not be required to submit pictures of themselves working on sewing projects with their supporting information.

Dairy & Other Goat Identification ONLY

Dairy & Other Goat exhibitors MUST have either a scrapies tag, tattoo, or a vaccination tag as a form of identification on each goat and be reported on ID Sheets when turned in. The reasoning for this is that not all dairy and other goat breeds are able to wear a scrapies tag, and they are not state fair eligible. Please call us with any questions.

Best Dressed Goat Contest

**For 2026** The Colfax County 4-H Council is sponsoring a 4-H Goat Exhibitor "best dressed goat contest" in 2026! Awards given will be in honor of Marty Andersen's final year serving as a superintendent. Can be a dairy or meat goat.

Age divisions:

Clover Kid (Ages 5-7 before January 1)-Clover Kids must participate with an adult family member and have their own goat that is on their ID sheet to participate.

Junior (Ages 8-10 before January 1)

Intermediate (Ages 11-13 before January 1)

Senior (Ages 14-18 before January 1)

Have fun with your themes! For example, could be a favorite singer, ball player, seasonal, etc.

Goats being entered into this contest can only be entered by the exhibitor showing the animal in the regular show.

Online Horticulture Contest

Do you know what it takes to pick the best fruit and vegetables out at the grocery store? Or do you know what judges are looking for when they judge your plants at the county fair? Have you ever wondered, what plant is that!?! We are excited to offer the opportunity to learn these and other important horticulture skills through the Online Horticulture Contest. The contest will be available June 9-23, 2026 at: http://go.unl.edu/online4hhortcontest

Horticulture judging contest consists of three parts. The first is identification of plant material. Participants identify the plants by common name from a plant list. Specimens may be alive or preserved plant parts like stems, twigs, leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits, roots, bulbs, tubers, or plant products.

The second is a knowledge portion, usually in the form of a true/false or multiple choice quiz. Questions will test the contestant's knowledge of cultural practices for horticultural crops, plant science, pesticides, horticultural careers and other topics related to the production, processing and consumption of horticultural crops.

The last portion is judging or placings. This is where four different plants, plates of vegetables, or containers flowers are ranked from best to worst based on a set of criteria. Classes are judged on the basis of condition, quality, uniformity, true-to-type, and size.

More information about the Nebraska State contest along with a list of study materials can be found in the Horticulture ID Contest Fairbook. Here you can find the written study materials for the knowledge portion, follow links to plant pictures for help with identification, and read how judging of plant material is done.
