Greetings Doty Families!

Our first full week is drawing to a close and all of us are pretty darn tired! I’d say for the most part that we are happy tired. School is a lot. You have to get used to working and being on a schedule, being focused for extended periods of time, getting along with other people, and not just kicking back and relaxing whenever you want to.

Thank you to all of you who could make it to open house and the potluck. Bringing the community together is what I like best! Please feel welcome to reach out to your student’s teacher whenever you have questions! It is also helpful for teachers if you let them know about times your student might not be sleeping well or might be super excited about something happening outside of school. We don’t need or want details of your home life. It is just helpful to know if we have an extra tired muffin here or one who is maybe thinking a little bit more about the fair than they are about school!

We are getting into the season where we come to school bundled up and shed layers as the day goes on. We do our best to send kids home with what they came in with. Given that I left my own jacket here every day, it’s not something that we are all good at. If you can, leaving a sweatshirt at school can be a good way to deal with changing weather. If your student is wearing a sweatshirt in the morning, make sure they have something on underneath in case it gets warm. Kids often wear sweatshirts without a tee underneath and then get hot and are stuck in it.

We are working on putting together an event where a car seat safety technician comes to Doty to fit and check car seats. The technician can also look at seats that your student may have outgrown to see if it is okay to pass along to another family. Before we move beyond the idea stage, we need to know if folks are interested. Please complete this short survey to let us know!

As always, thank you for sharing your students with us!

Car Safety Tips - Be Carseat Safe!

We at Doty School care about the health and safety of every family and child in this community. I would like to review car seat and seatbelt safety, since many car accidents happen within a few miles of home. Buckling up while traveling to and from school is just as important as traveling to Montpelier or farther from home.

Please buckle your child in a car seat, in the backseat, away from front passenger seat air bags. Air bags can injure children who are too small for that seat. If your child must be in the front seat, please turn off the air bag. Middlesex Fire Department has a car seat check this Saturday from 10-1 (see the link below).

According to Vermont State Law, No person shall operate a motor vehicle, other than a type I school bus, in this state upon a public highway unless every occupant under age 16 is properly restrained in a federally approved child passenger restraining system as defined in 49 C.F.R. § 571.213 (1993) or a federally-approved safety belt, as follows:

  • All children under the age of one, and all children weighing less than 20 pounds, regardless of age, shall be restrained in a rear-facing position, properly secured in a federally-approved child passenger restraining system, which shall not be installed in front of an active airbag.

  • A child weighing more than 20 pounds, and who is one year of age or older and under the age of eight years, shall be restrained in a child passenger restraining system (This means convertible, combination, and booster child safety seats); and

  • A child eight through 15 years of age shall be restrained in a safety belt system or a child passenger restraining system.
