Board of Education Update

Capital Project

The North Rose-Wolcott Board of Education would like to take this opportunity to thank the district communities for supporting and voting in favor of our 2025 Capital Project proposal on December 17. Your support will allow the district to address needs and safety concerns for our students, staff and visitors.

The capital project will enable the district to move forward in relocating and building a new bus garage. In doing so, the bus loop and student pick-up and drop-off area at North Rose-Wolcott Elementary can be reconfigured to improve safety and eliminate traffic congestion. Additionally, the new location for the bus garage will provide our high school students and staff with a nearby evacuation facility in the event of an emergency situation and allow for safer student pickup if such a situation were to occur. We as a board are proud and excited about the improvements that capital projects allow. We will keep the community updated as the projects progress.

Other Board Activities

In January, board members attended the Legislative Breakfast held at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES in Newark. This event allowed board members to connect with representatives including state Senator Pamela Helming and Assemblyman Brian Manktelow. Legislators fielded questions, demonstrated their knowledge of the issues facing rural districts like NRW, and showed their support for working toward solutions to those issues.

Board members plan to have dinner with the cast of the high school musical, “Legally Blonde,” and community members prior to the senior citizen performance on Thursday, February 26. Additionally, in March, the board is planning a visit to BOCES programs and members plan to attend a Four County School Boards Association meeting featuring Wade Norwood of the New York State Board of Regents and Patrick Longo of the New York State School Boards Association.

Our board meetings are open to the public and held in the Large Group Instruction Room at the District Office. Visit www.nrwcs.org/boe for a meeting schedule or to view meeting live streams and recordings.

Communication Protocol

The North Rose-Wolcott Central School District is committed to fostering effective communication between schools, families and the community. We have established a process for working through questions and concerns so that we may come to solutions quickly and effectively. Portrait of an NRW Graduate: Social Emotional Competency

The North Rose-Wolcott Strategic Action Plan adopted in 2025 features seven components that make up the Portrait of an NRW Graduate. These characteristics represent a clear vision for what it means to be a graduate of the North Rose-Wolcott Central School District. They guide our daily work to prepare our students to thrive beyond NRW as lifelong learners, engaged citizens, and compassionate leaders.

Social emotional competency means understanding one's own emotions, thoughts and values and how they influence behavior. NRW graduates are self-aware and grounded in their values. They recognize how their emotions and thoughts influence their actions, allowing them to make thoughtful decisions, build positive relationships, and contribute to the greater community.

Updates from Mrs. Haak and Mr. Stopka

Happy February! As we move through the heart of the school year, I want to take a moment to share some exciting news and a few helpful reminders.

Celebrating Student Growth 📈
Our students have officially completed their winter i-Ready benchmark assessments, and we are thrilled with the results. Across grade levels, we are seeing strong academic growth in both reading and math. This progress reflects the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers and staff, and the continued support you provide at home. We are so proud of how our students are growing as learners!

Teachers are using this data to celebrate successes, set new goals, and tailor instruction to meet each student’s needs as we head into the spring.

Cougar Pride Focus: “Do My Best” 🐾
Our Cougar Pride trait for February is “Do My Best.” Throughout the month, students are learning that doing their best means showing effort, staying focused, trying even when things feel challenging, and having a positive attitude toward learning. We encourage families to talk with their children about what “doing your best” looks like at home and at school, and to celebrate effort—not just outcomes.

Looking Ahead
February is a busy and exciting month filled with learning, celebrations, and continued growth. Please keep an eye out for upcoming events and important dates, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need support.

Thank you for being such wonderful partners in your child’s education. Together, we are helping our students learn, grow, and thrive every day.

100th Day of School - Thursday, February 12!

We will celebrate the 100th day of school on February 12th! Our spirit day will be to dress like we are 100 years old!

Wednesday, February 12th, marks our 100th Day of School!

We are excited to celebrate this special milestone with fun, engaging activities centered around the number 100. Students will take part in themed lessons and classroom celebrations throughout the day. Some classes may choose to dress up or participate in creative projects—teachers will share any specific details if needed. We’re looking forward to making the 100th Day of School a fun and memorable experience for our students!

Counseling Corner - Miss Motyka and Mr. Bittner

The Cougar Closet, located at the elementary school, has an abundance of clothes and items of all sizes from 4T-14/16, including shirts, sweatshirts, coats, winter accessories, and more. If you're interested in any of these items or even other items not listed, please reach out to Miranda Motyka at mmotyka@nrwcs.org, and she will do her best to fulfill your need. Even if we don't have it in the Closet, she has local resources who can also help. Please don't hesitate to reach out at anytime!

Curriculum Updates from our Instructional Coach, Mrs. Pentycofe

All of our mid-year i-Ready Reading and Math diagnostics are complete! The mid-year diagnostic shows how much students have grown since the beginning of the year in reading and math. Even if a student isn’t at grade level yet, the test highlights growth and improvement—which is motivating for students and families. We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and focus during the assessment period.

These assessments help teachers understand students’ progress and plan instruction that best meets their needs for the remainder of the school year. Teachers use the results to adjust lessons, small groups, and interventions so instruction matches what students need right now. The tests also help identify areas where students may need extra support before the end of the school year. Teachers have Math and Reading WIN (What I Need) time built into their day to focus on areas where students need support.

Results of these assessments help teachers, students, and families set meaningful learning goals for the remainder of the year. Our school continues to focus on personalized learning, and goal setting is one area we celebrate. When students help set goals, they understand what they’re working toward and why it matters.

Spotlight on First Grade

Our first graders have been busy learning, exploring, and growing across all subject areas! In science, students are loving our unit A Bunny’s Life, where they are exploring how inherited traits and characteristics of animals and their offspring are similar and different. Using Venn diagrams, students collected and compared data about animals, an important skill they will continue to build on, including in preparation for the Grade 3 NYS Science Assessment. They even made personal connections by identifying traits they share with their own parents, making learning both meaningful and engaging. In math, students are developing strong problem-solving skills by working with a variety of strategies to solve word problems. They are adding and subtracting within 20, comparing numbers, and analyzing data using charts and graphs. Each student is also working along their own individualized learning pathway in i-Ready, with goals set to support growth and celebrate progress.

During our literacy block (ELA), students are deepening their understanding of how authors and illustrators bring stories to life. In shared reading, first graders are learning about typography and text graphics, and how the way words look on the page can enhance a story. They love noticing words that pop, stretch, or stand out, especially onomatopoeia like BOOM! and discussing how these choices make books more exciting for readers. As writers, students are working hard to “tell more” by using descriptive words instead of relying on pictures alone. They are learning how strong word choice helps readers visualize their stories and brings their writing to life. It is wonderful to see our first graders so engaged, curious, and proud of their learning each day!

Middle School Updates Middle School Updates

Updates from Mrs. Yarnes and Mr. Canori

We can’t believe we are already halfway through the school year! The past few weeks have been very busy with midterms, benchmark assessments, and the completion of Quarter 2. We are incredibly proud of the growth our students continue to show. Thank you to all of the parents and family members who joined us for our iReady celebration to honor students who met grade-level expectations or demonstrated growth during the winter benchmark. Your support means so much!

As we move into the second half of the year, we ask that you continue to partner with us by reminding your child about the importance of kindness and respect. We are having ongoing conversations at school about choosing positive words, showing compassion, and demonstrating empathy toward others. These values are central to our school community, and we remain committed to creating a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for all students.

In addition, this is a critical time for students to stay focused on their academics. Regularly completing assignments, studying for assessments, and keeping up with daily homework all play an important role in student success. When students come to school prepared and engaged, they build stronger habits, develop confidence, and make the most of their learning opportunities. Your encouragement and support at home make a meaningful difference.

Lastly, we hope you and your family enjoy a relaxing and well-deserved February recess.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Message from our Counseling Center

We have officially reached the second half of the year! This is a great time for students to reset and start the quarter strong.

Regular school attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success - academically, socially, and emotionally. When students attend school consistently, they are more likely to:

  • Feel connected to peers and adults

  • Keep up with learning and classroom expectations

  • Build strong routines and confidence

  • Reduce stress caused by missing work

Even missing a day here and there can add up quickly. We encourage families to prioritize attendance whenever possible and schedule appointments outside of school hours if able. If your family is experiencing challenges that impact attendance, such as illness, anxiety, transportation issues, or other concerns, please reach out to the counseling office. We are here to support, problem-solve, and connect you with resources.

Let’s work together to make February a strong month for showing up, staying engaged, and finishing the winter season strong!

Grade Level Updates

Grade 5: In ELA, students are continuing to read the book "I Survived the American Revolution" by Lauren Tarshis. We are focusing on topics such as point of view, theme, comparing & contrasting and main idea. In math we are starting our 5th unit involving long division of both whole numbers and long division involving decimals! We will be focusing on the following math vocabulary; quotient, divident, divisor, and remainder. In Science, we are starting off a new unit for Earth and Space Explorers. Students will engage with questions related to the sun’s brightness and gravity while analyzing data and patterns relating to shadows, day and night and seasonal changes in the night sky. In Social Studies, we will be continuing on our European Explorers unit learing about what country the Explorers are representing, where they went, why they went and what they found when they arrived and how they traded.

Grade 6: In math this month, we are working on solving algebraic expressions and equations using Order of Operations (PEMDAS). We will also be working with inequalities and finding solution sets to problems. In ELA this month, the students will be learning about the different types of poetry and how to identify the different parts of a poem. We will then use that information to publish poems of our own for different genres. After winter break, we will be introducing our new book. In Science we are continuing our astronomy unit with a study of each of the planets in our solar system. In Social Studies we are wrapping up our unit on Egypt. Students will have a test next week. Then we will begin our Greece unit.

Grade 7: In ELA 7 we are beginning our next fictional novel. We are collaborating again with Mr. Maring's social study curriculum, as we take a closer look into learning about the Puritan way of life. The main character in our new story goes from living a well pampered life on the island of Barbados, to having to live in the Puritanical lifestyle in the colony of Connecticut. We will follow the character in the story through her extraordinary journey, where she is faced with difficult choices and new realities.

Grade 8: 8th grade baby pictures are due Friday February 6th! Please submit a baby picture to Mrs. Weigand at cweigand@nrwcs.org as soon as possible! 8th grade is also working on positive incentives for students that are consistently completing homework, using class time wisely and making an effort to improve grades. Social Studies students will be placed in families this week for the start of our Great Depression simulation. A large focus on Contextual Redefinition, a strategy that enhances vocabulary comprehension will be at the center of our skills based initiative for the month. Resources for summative assessment will be made available for students to utilize for upcoming vocabulary content as well. Spanish students are working on skits in February and March. This will help to prepare them for the speaking portion of their final exam at the end of the year.

Updates from Ms. Sinclair and Ms. Visalli

We are already several weeks into the second semester, and by all accounts, the year is moving quickly! Spring sports will be starting soon, and many students are already planning for end-of-year events. This month, we are excited to share our musical production, Legally Blonde. Our students have been working incredibly hard, and we look forward to welcoming the community to enjoy their amazing performance.

Attendance Reminder
As we move through the semester, we ask for your continued support in reinforcing the importance of students arriving to class on time. Timely arrival to class helps minimize disruptions and ensures students do not miss valuable instructional time.

Chromebook Reminder
Please ensure that students bring their charged Chromebooks to school each day. If a student’s Chromebook is not working properly, they should bring it to the high school library for assistance as soon as possible.

Upcoming Dates
There will be no school from Monday, February 16 through Friday, February 20. Classes will resume on Monday, February 23.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to make this a successful semester for all students.
