A Message from the Principal
Dear Academy Families and Friends,
Welcome to May! Things are really starting to move into the Springtime Activities. Please see the reminders below...so many great events you won't want to miss:
- MCAS returns this week for our third and fourth graders. (See the schedule below)
- Running club kicked off on Wednesday and will run each Wednesday until the big meet.
- Last week we celebrated Administrative Assistants' Day, School Lunch Hero Day, and Principal's Day (thank you). This week, we celebrate our teachers and staff for all the amazing things they do for our school community!!! We have an amazing team of educators and support staff here at Academy!
- Last week, our students in grades 3-5 participated in the Panorama survey. We're excited to see the data as fostering a strong school climate is one of our top priorities.
- This upcoming Friday, we'll hold our Springtime "I Walk to School" day. We hope on Friday to see tons of students and friends join us along the route as we walk from Legion Field and the Essex Street Soccer fields along the route to Academy. You can join at any stop along the way. We are proud Safe Routes to School partners.
- Also please remember that parking is prohibited around the driveway roundabout in the morning and afterschool. Please remember to adhere to posted neighborhood street signs and respect our neighbors when parking on off campus streets like Candia, Sutton and Broad St. Place.
Let's have a GREAT May!
Mr. Patrick J. Higgins
Principal

The Brain Show is Coming
“The Brain Show” Family Engagement Event: Join WPS for a night of family fun and learning! The Brain Show is an interactive educational family game show where students and their families compete by answering trivia questions. Join families from your school and others at the Maria Weston Chapman auditorium for this awesome free event!
Sign ups begin at 6:00 pm, and the show starts at 6:30pm.
Academy, Murphy, Pingree and Talbot: Tuesday, May 5th
Please note: All students must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. We hope to see you there!
Internet Safety Event-May 7
Next Thursday night (May 7) at 6:30 there will be a parent event regarding Internet Safety. As students are accessing the Internet, in school and at home, please remember to actively monitor what your children are accessing on their devices. It is important to have regular talks with your children about online safety and making good choices as we see an uptick with online apps, games, and social media with our students. Click here to Register for the Internet Safety Event.
Lip Sync is Back...Don't Delay Sign Up Today!
The entries are in. We reached our max with 33 groups who will take the stage in our annual Lip Sync competition. We're excited to see all of the performances on May 14, 2026 at the Chapman Middle School Auditorium. The event is 6-8PM!
Playground Etiquette
Playground Expectations
As the weather continues to improve, we are so excited to see our Academy families using the playground after school. Consistency is so important for our students that we find it important to share with you our playground expectations that we provide to the students during the school day. We hope this carries over to after school and beyond:
Everyone plays – Every game is open to whoever wants to play as long as those playing are being safe, respectful and responsible during the game. Including others are expected behaviors.
Play safe – Students must play so that they and others are not physically or emotionally hurt. Students must avoid rough play, unsafe play, and name-calling. Examples of unsafe play include jumping from the top of the play structure or sliding into someone still on or near the end of the slide.
Be Respectful- Students will listen and follow directions. They will be kind and provide other students an opportunity to use the play structure. Keep hands and feet to themselves. Please stay away and out of the woods and please remember to keep sticks and stones on the ground and away from the play areas. Ball play should be reserved to the baseball field and away from the play structures.
