Career and Technical Education: Education Today, Employment Tomorrow
Exploring the Human Body and Beyond: The Biomedical Pathway at Pueblo West High School
Exploring the Human Body and Beyond: The Biomedical Pathway at Pueblo West High School
At Pueblo West High School, students aren’t just learning science—they’re living it. The Biomedical Pathway and the career and technical student organization (CTSO) HOSA-Future Health Professionals, one of the school’s growing Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, gives students hands-on experience in the world of medical science, preparing them for future careers in healthcare, research, and biotechnology.
In the Principles of Biomedical Science course, students begin by studying diseases and body systems. As they move through the pathway, courses like Human Body Systems and Medical Interventions challenge them to apply their learning in practical ways—designing prosthetic limbs, modeling organ systems, or exploring treatments for cancer and infectious diseases. Senior students cap off their experience with Biomedical Innovation, a project-based course that encourages independent research and creativity. Students taking this course can also elect to take the Biotechnician Assistant Credential Exam (BACE) to become industry certified to work in a lab. Students can also take Anatomy and Physiology, where they are eligible to earn college credit from Pueblo Community College or a Phlebotomy credential. Whether they’re developing a new medical device or investigating public-health challenges, students are encouraged to think like scientists, engineers, and healthcare professionals.
Beyond the classroom, the pathway connects students to real-world employment opportunities through a strong local partnership. Thanks to the Student-to-Employment (STEP) Program at UCHealth Parkview Medical Center, high-school seniors who participate in healthcare-oriented programs have the chance to gain observation, internship and job-interview privileges right in the regional health-care system.
Students complete observation and internship rotations at Parkview, gaining exposure to a variety of health-care careers.
Upon graduation and satisfying job qualifications, participants are guaranteed an interview for employment at UCHealth Parkview.
This means that a student in the biomedical pathway isn’t just setting themselves up for college and advanced study—they’re positioning themselves for employment right here in the Pueblo region.
Whether students choose nursing, medical diagnostics, forensics, biomedical engineering, or other health-care support roles, the bridge from classroom to career is very real. Pueblo West High is offering more than a traditional science track—it’s offering a full career-and-college launchpad into healthcare and life sciences.
