The Educational Services team has been hard at work this summer to ensure your child has a successful school year. Our team has met with the principals and assistant principals to analyze student achievement data and create plans for this school year to ensure academic success and high levels of learning for our PJUSD scholars. Furthermore, student achievement data will be presented during next week’s Governing Board meeting on August 7 and with teachers on August 8.
Last week we welcomed over thirty new PJUSD teachers during a two-day New Teacher Orientation which prepared them to welcome our scholars next week for the first days of school. Our new teachers are excited, energetic, and ready to ensure our PJUSD scholars have a successful year! Also, the Educational Services team is providing professional development to all our teachers next week on welcoming and engaging classroom environments so our PJUSD scholars feel connected at school, in their classrooms, and are engaged in their learning this year!
Finally, do you have a child whose 5th birthday will occur between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024? If so, your child qualifies to attend our exceptional transitional kindergarten program housed at PJUSD’s West Valley Learning Center. Also, children who are three or four years old may also enroll and attend one of our excellent preschool programs. To inquire about PJUSD’s transitional kindergarten program or our preschool programs, including how to enroll, please contact the West Valley Learning Center staff at (209) 892-4550.

Attendance Matters
School attendance continues to be a high priority for our district. It is essential that all our students attend every day to ensure they do not miss out on important lessons and are able to reach their highest academic potential. Below are some tips for parents to help improve school attendance:
Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day!
What you can do:
Make school attendance a priority.
Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day. Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.
Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomachaches may be signs of anxiety.
Help your child stay engaged.
Find out if your child feels engaged in his classes and feels safe from mistreatment. Make sure he/she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school.
Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
Communicate with the school.
Know the school’s attendance policy.
Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school.
Check on your child's attendance to be sure absences are not piling up.
Ask for help from school officials, after-school programs, other parents, or community agencies if you’re having trouble getting your child to school.
Did you know:
Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay on track to graduation.
Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with mistreatment, or facing other serious problems.
By 6th grade, absenteeism is a sign that a student may drop out of high school.
By 9th grade, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th-grade test scores.
Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks.
Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job.

Our Administrative Services Teams have been working hard this summer to prepare for the start of the new school year. In addition to maintaining the cleanliness of our school sites and classrooms, we have achieved some noteworthy accomplishments over the past few months.
In the area of construction, we recently completed the revitalization of the Dave Klein gymnasium floor at Patterson High School, adding a wonderful aesthetic to our school's gym. Furthermore, we have collaborated closely with the City of Patterson to finish the construction of the crosswalk outside our Performing Arts Theater. We are excited to finally welcome our students and staff into this beautiful facility.
Our district also successfully hosted its first Citizens Oversight Committee for Measure E. During this meeting, we introduced the members of this volunteer committee to the background and purpose of an oversight committee, as well as provide a description of their roles and responsibilities to ensure our district remains compliant with the projects described in the November 2022 ballot. We are grateful to have such a committed group of individuals assisting us in maintaining oversight and transparency with our bond projects.
On the nutrition front, Nutrition Services has been working diligently with our new partners at Sodexo to update our nutrition menus. This effort aims to provide an enhanced meal experience at all our schools.
Lastly, our IT team has been preparing to meet the technology needs of our students and families. If you have any questions or require assistance with your school devices before the school opens, please feel free to contact our helpdesk at 209-895-7731.
Communications
Our district strives to provide effective, meaningful communication among our schools, parents, staff, and community.
In addition to our websites and this newsletter, we encourage our parents to utilize our other communication platforms to ensure you stay up-to-date on all of our school and district events, activities, announcements, and celebrations.
ParentSquare
ParentSquare is one of the most important communication platforms we use in our district. It is a safe, secure, and modern approach to communication and collaboration between the district, schools, and home. It is a central hub for all district, school, grade level, class, and group notifications about your children.
Parents/guardians new to our district may have recently received an invite to activate their access to ParentSquare but if you are not yet connected, please reach out to your school site or our district to help get you connected.
You can also click the following link to register for ParentSquare, or to login and update your settings and preferences: https://www.parentsquare.com/signin
Peachjar
Peachjar is an electronic flyer distribution system that allows district staff and community partners to distribute flyers directly to students, parents, and school staff.
This communication tool helps streamline our network of communication and ensures that important information about our schools and/or community events is not lost in the transition from a student's backpack by providing a digital distribution system that goes directly to our parents, students, and staff emails.
Community flyers are vetted for relevance and appropriateness at the district level and allow our partners an opportunity to share important resources and activities with our families.
Facebook is our district's recognized social media platform. Here we share photos, videos, informational, and celebratory messages about our students, staff, and district/school initiatives.
Each school site has a Facebook page. We encourage all our parents and staff to follow your school's page and our district's page to join us in celebration of all the amazing things our schools, students, and staff engage in throughout the district.
