Roper Mountain Field Trip on Wednesday
Important Reminders!
Our field trip is on Wednesday, October 21st! We are looking forward to a fun and memorable day with our students! We plan to leave school around 9:00 AM and return around 1:30–1:45 PM.
Please make sure your child wears their new forest green Woodland T-shirt and comfortable clothing for the day. Since the mornings can be a little chilly, we would also recommend sending your child in with a lightweight jacket.
If you did not pre-order a cafeteria lunch on your child’s permission form packet, please remember to send a lunch from home in a disposable bag labeled with your child’s name.
Also-please remember to send in $3.00 cash or pay online at SchoolCash (linked).
We have had several families turn in the permission forms without submitting payment.
If you have any questions/concerns please reach out to your child's teacher!
Message from SRO Johnson
Safety is my number one priority each and every day while I am here at Woodland Elementary. The safety of our faculty, staff, students, and their families is always my primary concern.
This includes drop-off and pick-up times, which, as you all know, can be extremely busy. Over the past few weeks, I have been observing traffic entering and exiting campus. During this time, one of my major concerns has been the number of near misses and close calls involving vehicles at the entrance and exit, particularly when vehicles attempt to make a left turn onto Gibbs Shoals Road when leaving campus.
For example, two weeks ago, a vehicle attempting to turn left onto Gibbs Shoals Road pulled out in front of a vehicle traveling straight. The approaching vehicle had to leave the roadway and travel onto the shoulder to avoid a collision.
Please remember that left turns are prohibited when exiting campus during the designated times. There are signs posted at the exit indicating that left turns are not permitted from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and from 2:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
These restrictions are in place for your safety, as well as the safety of other motorists traveling on Gibbs Shoals Road. I would truly hate to see anyone involved in a traffic collision resulting in serious injuries or, even worse, a loss of life.
Beginning Monday, October 12th, I will begin enforcement of the no left turn. During the designated no-left-turn times in the morning and afternoon, you will see me and my patrol vehicle, along with traffic cones, blocking the left-turn lane. Please use caution as you enter and exit our beautiful campus, and remember to obey all posted traffic signs and traffic laws. I understand that some may feel this is an inconvenience, but it is our responsibility to prioritize safety for all citizens.
Your safety and the safety of our students and families are far more important than saving a few extra minutes. Once again, I am excited to be here and look forward to a great school year and getting to know each of you!

Let's Celebrate Red Ribbon Week
October 26th-30th
KIDS’ MARATHON CLUB
The marathon club is designed to encourage students to establish lifelong fitness habits by becoming involved in a participatory/goal setting activity. The goal is to log enough miles to complete a full marathon. The Prisma Health Run4Life race will serve as this group’s main event. The race is only $10 for the One Mile and $15 (after discount code) for the 5K. Run4Life is also an event the whole Woodland Family can enjoy (Parents, Grandparents, Sibling, Friends) with your choice of either the 5K or 1 Mile courses, all while supporting cancer patients in our community. Run4Life raises money to fight cancer. If you would like to give toward this great cause, go to: www.run4lifesc.org and click on the donate tab. Please select Woodland Elementary under the TEAMS tab so your donation will count for our team.

What We're Learning
Math
We will continue building our problem-solving skills by exploring different types of addition and subtraction word problems. Students will practice putting groups together, taking groups apart, and comparing quantities to find what is missing.
We will use drawings, numbers, and equations to represent and solve problems. Students will also complete a short quiz to show what they have learned.
Reading
We will focus on the important parts of a story, including the characters, setting, and plot.
We will practice putting events in the correct order and talking about what happens at the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
Check out these additional resources!
Weekly Spelling Pattern
-SPELLING TEST ON FRIDAY-
Spelling Pattern: Inflectional Endings -s, -es, -ed. When a noun ends with s, sh, ch, x, or z, you add –es, not just -s to make it plural, -ed makes verbs past tense.
Weekly Spelling List (linked)
2nd grade teachers will be sending home examples of words to practice, not a list to memorize. Interested in why we are making this shift? Click HERE to find out!
LANGUAGE- We will learn capitalization of proper nouns (holidays, product names, and geographic names).
Writing
We will continue working on our opinion writing!
Students will practice sharing what they think and giving reasons to explain their opinions. We will focus on adding facts and details to support our reasons and help make our writing stronger.
Social Studies
We will learn more about the history of the United States! We will explore important historical events, holidays and observances, and people who have helped shape our country. We will also learn about important American symbols and what they represent. Students will use different sources to gather information and decide which sources are helpful as they learn about our nation's history.
Science
Social Studies Instructional Week!
-Sharing My Culture At-Home Project-
Please help your child complete this "My Culture" Project at home!
Part 1: Research & Complete Fact Sheet (Classwork/Homework)
Country/Region: Students will choose a country/US region/state of importance to them or their family culture. They will research their choice, including facts about its culture and what makes it unique. Students will need to identify the native language, special holidays/traditions, foods, dress, etc. Parents can help students identify these special characteristics if needed. (Example: Louisiana (New Orleans-Carnival; Mexico-Day of the Dead, etc.) Students will have some time in class to complete the planning page, but may need to finish at home.
Part 2: Make a Visual Display (Homework) Visual Display/Completed Planning Page Due: November 6th, 2026: Students will create a visual display to share the information they learned about their country. The display must be colorful, creative, well-organized, and contain both words and images to share their research! A trifold presentation board will be provided to each student.
Part 3: Presentation (At School) Presentation Date: November 10th, 2026: Now, you get to show what you know! On the day of the presentation, you will discuss all the research you found about your chosen country/US region. You may also dress in native clothing or bring in artifacts used in your country’s culture. If you speak your country’s language, you can even share some common phrases! You will have the opportunity to practice in class beforehand.
Spelling

Math
- Your child will have a math homework sheet this week. Please help your student by reviewing the concepts that we are learning in school. Any extra practice that you can provide at home will help so much to reinforce what we have been learning in school.
Reading
- Reading every night is imperative to your child's success in 2nd grade. Your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes every night.
Tech Tuesdays/Thursdays
- As a grade level, we have decided to send Chromebooks and chargers home with students on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On these days, students may use school-approved apps and programs to practice skills they are learning in the classroom, such as IXL, Web Math Minute, Amira, Google Classroom assignments, and more.
If your child brings their Chromebook home, please help us by making sure:
- The Chromebook is charged after your child finishes their work.
- The Chromebook and charger are both returned to school the following day.
- The Chromebook is used only for school-approved activities.
Thank you for helping us ensure that our students have access to these valuable learning tools while also taking good care of their devices!

Attendance Information
Attendance Matters!
- Students will only be allowed 10 total absences. Greenville County states that students must be present 170 of 180 days. This can be combination of parent notes, or unexcused absences. A student will be considered TRUANT with 3 consecutive unexcused absences, or 5 total unexcused absences. Chronic absences and tardiness can affect the entire classroom, disrupting the flow of learning. Attending school REGULARLY and ON TIME creates a positive environment for everyone! If a student misses more than 10 days, all additional absences must be medical or principal approved to be classified as an excused absence. We are no longer able to accept text messages or class app messages. Attendance must be communicated through email to your child's teacher, email to Mrs. Rogers, or a physical note in your child's red folder.
Student/Parent Backpack
A backpack for parents account provides parents, guardians, or contacts with a central place to sign in to do the following:
- View their student's information including demographics, attendance, classes, grades, lunch balances, and test scores
- Apply or register their student to Special Focus schools and programs (Fine Arts Center, Career Centers, etc.)
- Receive alerts and notifications regarding their students
- View their student's school and contact information
- Manage parent and contact information for their students

Become a Woodland 8 Habit Family!
We would love for you to help us bring the 8 Habits home. Please click HERE for our family 8 Habits Choice Board. You will see just how easy it is to use the 8 Habit language at home and how it can transform your family’s habits and behaviors at home in a positive way. Once you complete the choice board as a family by completing 2 tasks from each section, send it back to any of your children’s teachers, and you will earn a Woodland 8 Habits magnet for your car. We would also love it if you could take a family picture of you all completing one of the Habits and send it to your classroom teacher so that we can celebrate your family on social media and maybe even our school website!
