Being Prepared for Outdoor Recess

It is officially winter and we need your help to ensure that children get outdoors for fresh air, exercise and play as long as it is safe to do so. Please help us by ensuring that children have the proper outdoor gear. If they do not have the proper gear to play outside, students may need to remain inside to enjoy a book or engage in a brain break. Also, please be aware that we have plenty of outdoor equipment, playground balls and other games that the students can access for recess. There is no need for students to bring in any of their own play equipment.

Conversation and Reading 20 minutes everyday are super important- here are some tips, try them and have some fun with your child!

  • Talk, talk, and talk some more with your child. Ask your child to describe his/her school day and what he/she did. Don’t forget to share your day too!

  • Read a book with your child at least 20 minutes every day. Yes that’s weekends too! It’s totally fine to read the same favorite book over and over. Visit the library regularly to borrow different books.

  • Before reading the words in a book, flip through the pages, look at the pictures and talk about each picture. Have your child talk about what he/she thinks the story is about.

  • While reading a book together, connect the book to your child’s personal experiences. Ask what might happen next in the story.

  • After reading a book, talk about your child's favorite part of the story-and yours too!

  • Regularly model good reading habits by reading magazines, books, or listening to podcasts for your own enjoyment.

LOST AND FOUND

The Lost and Found area is filled with winter clothing and various other items. Please help by labeling your children's clothing so that when it is lost, it can be returned. Thank you.

Attendance really does matter!

There is a direct correlation between literacy and school attendance. If children don't attend school regularly they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills AND the chance to build the habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Preliminary data from one study found that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and grade 1 were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of grade 3. Did you know that missing 10% of the school year is considered chronic absenteeism? That is as few as 2 days of school per month! The more a child misses school the more challenging it is to make up for lost time.

MOBILE DENTIST

The dentist is coming to Carver Elementary School in December! Parents/Guardians may simply complete the form at www.MySchoolDentist.com to allow their child to be seen by the in-school dentist, or return the sign-up forms that were sent home.

Veterans Day 2019

On Friday, November 8th, Carver Elementary students and staff welcomed almost 70 Veterans to our school. Our 6th Annual Veterans Day Celebration included breakfast for the Veterans and their families, music from both our Advanced Band and Chorus, an all school assembly, and classroom visits by most of the Veterans. To all Veterans we say thank you for your service!

The 4th grade students along with Ms. Harkins organized the Great Good Night Pajama Drive!

It was a huge success with 208 PJ's being donated and the great thing about this is Scholastic News will be matching our donation. All the PJ's collected are for infants through adults in need- what a great cause and amazing act of kindness by all our students and families. Thank you!

Thank you all our Carver Families and students for your help with the Food Drive. It was a huge success!

What was great about it is that we all had such a fun time dressing up for theme week while we gathered much needed supplies for our local food pantry. Altogether 2700 non-perishable food items were collected. We are super grateful to everyone for their help in donating these necessary items. Another great way to show our support for our amazing Carver Community!
