SLEDMERE CE PRIMARY SCHOOL
WEEK ENDING 11TH FEBRUARY 2022
'Learning and growing in the love of God.' (1 John 4:16)
PLAYTIMES
We have already identified ways to continue to make playtimes interesting and fun. Playground Leaders is an initiative we use to give pupils leadership experience whilst helping to support other children with a range of activities. We have re-launched and staff continue to work with the pupil volunteers.
Another way we are promoting physical activity is by making the Daily Mile more exciting and a participatory experience. Mr Wood has a host of ideas including specific activities a set points around the circuit.
Mr Kaufman is working with the children to see if we can attract more wildlife to our school grounds for the children to be able to observe. This links with curriculum work and with wider initiatives such as the Big Garden Birdwatch and this week's National Bird Box Week.
In order to maximise any use of our outdoor environment it is very helpful if your child can be sent with wellies or suitable outdoor shoes and a plastic bag to store them in. Thank you to everyone who already does this.
LOVE OF READING
Love of reading
Research specifically shows that the benefits of reading are more likely to be felt when reading takes place through free choice. The outcomes of reading will occur more often and more strongly if reading is enjoyable in the first instance. This is why the 'for pleasure' element of reading for pleasure is so important.
Reading is not something that children should just do in school; it needs to be an everyday part of our lives, something we choose to do at all ages. At Sledmere and Wetwang Federation we have built a culture of reading for enjoyment that will develop a lifelong love of reading which benefits our children in so many ways.
We recognise that reading for pleasure encourages children to succeed both academically and socially.
At Sledmere and Wetwang Federation we are all passionate to make a difference and promote this love of reading. We aim to empower children to explore the multitude of worlds beyond their own world. So how do we do this?
- Reading in every curriculum area.
- Guided Reading.
- Sharing high quality texts in English.
- Sharing stories regularly.
- OWL time every Friday morning.
- Reading environment.
- Reading Raffle.
We'd also like to share with you some reminders of how you can help you child to read effectively:

CHURCH, GOVERNORS AND COMMUNITY
Here are some official ideas to whet the appetite.
If you have any time or ideas we'd love to hear them as we begin to plan for this memorable milestone.
COVID
At present, their advice is to continue with the protective measures which have worked very well including hand-hygiene, increased ventilation and the use of face coverings by staff in communal areas.
They are also still advising that if your child presents with the three common symptoms of COVID (high temperature, loss of taste/ smell and cough) that they stay off and take a PCR test. They also advise that children remain off if they receive a positive LFD test. If this advice from them changes we will be in contact.
Many thanks to those parents and carers who are informing us of absences whether it is COVID or something else. This really helps the office staff to monitor illness and prevents unnecessary phone calls or emails.
