Norvil Howell
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Norvil Howell. Alongside his contemporaries, Norvil helped build the foundation of music education in New Mexico. Work that all of us continue to benefit from today.
He was not only the longtime band director at Clovis High School and a former Executive Director of the New Mexico Music Educators Association, but also a mentor and a friend to so many. His influence reached far beyond the bandroom.
New Mexico music is stronger because of Norvil, and so are we.
State Contest Results
Congratulations to all of the band and choirs who performed at the State Choir and Band Contests. What a great week of music! Results can be found below:
State Marching Band Contest Registration
It is time to register for the 3rd Annual State Marching Contest to be held on October 24th. Remember that schools can register for comments only or to be entered into the competition class. Registrations received prior to May 1 will be entered into a drawing for performance order - so don't procrastinate!

All-State Audition Material
Audition material for the 2027 All-State Music Festival has been posted. Please make sure your students have the information and the correct audition material. Let the practicing begin!
2027 Honor Ensembles
Consider submitting a recording of your ensemble for consideration as a 2026 Honor Ensemble. All directors are welcome to apply, but the preferred rotation for the 2026 conference is outlined below:
- Alternative/Guitar - No rotation
- Choir & Orchestra - Small school/Middle School preference
- Band - Large school preference
- General Music - No rotation
- Jazz - Large school
