Kindergarten registration for our February newsletter
Kindergarten Registration:
Kindergarten registration information and instructions will be posted on the Eastwood Schools website in late February..
Kindergarten Age Requirement Change for 2026-27
Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, students will be eligible to enroll in kindergarten if they are 5 on or before August 25th, 2026. Ohio’s House Bill 114, signed in late 2025, requires students to be 5 years old by the first day of instruction for that school year to enroll in kindergarten.
Kindergarten Screening:
There will be some changes to our kindergarten screening process for the 2026-2027:
In the Spring of this school year, we will ONLY be screening students who live in the Eastwood School District.
If you are interested in open enrollment, you will need to apply beginning May 1, 2026. All Kindergarten open enrollment applicants will be screened in early August. A final decision about open enrollment for Kindergarten will be made shortly after the August screening. For this reason, we encourage you to also register and screen in your home district.
It is important that we see what our Eastwood enrollment numbers are BEFORE we accept students through open enrollment.
Preschool Move to the Elementary
With the flooding situation that occurred at our Central Office building, which houses our preschool, the decision was made to move the preschool into our building. When decisions like this happen within the school year, there are many adjustments that need to be made. The preschool will move into the elementary library. Our own K-4 library classes will take place in the middle school library. Mrs. Myers, our librarian, will meet each class in the connecting hallway between buildings and walk over to the MS library. Our Lifewise students will be going as normal, but their pick-up and drop-off location will be changed. We have discussed this with Lifewise.
Another change is that our preschool parents will pick up and drop off in our back parking lot. There are AM and PM sessions of preschool, and typically, we have around 35 students in each session, so the back parking lot will have more traffic at different times of the day.
Having the preschool in our building will alter some routines, as mentioned above, but the reality is that even though we have changes, everyone is working together and supporting the students and staff.
Ohio State Testing Information
State testing is approaching, and we want to emphasize that this is a team effort between families, school staff, and students. Together, we will support students in feeling prepared and confident so they can do their very best. We encourage students to use everything they have learned to show what they know, while remembering that these assessments are just one way to demonstrate their growth. Our goal is not to create stress, but to ensure students feel ready, supported, and proud of the effort they put forth!
Please be sure your student is present at school on testing days and mark these dates on your calendar. If your child is sick on a scheduled testing day, please call the office so we can arrange a make-up testing time.

Outside Recess
We will try to go outside as often as possible. When the real feel is at 20 degrees and it is not icy, we will go outside. If snow is covering the grassy areas of the playground, students must have snow pants, hats, gloves, and snow boots to play in the snow. Otherwise, they must stay on the blacktop when snow covers the grass.
Kindergarten News
Happy New Year!
January has been a month full of fresh starts, meaningful reflection, and exciting growth. As we welcomed the new year, our class family came together to celebrate new beginnings and set the tone for a positive and productive year ahead.
New Year’s Celebration
We kicked off January by celebrating the New Year with joy and enthusiasm! Students reflected on the past year and shared what they are most excited about in the months ahead. Students created New Year’s resolutions focused on learning, kindness, and perseverance. These goals will guide us as we continue to challenge ourselves and grow both academically and personally.
Building Fluency With Words
Throughout the month, we placed a strong emphasis on building fluency with words. Through reading, discussions, and word-based activities, students strengthened their confidence. Students have shown great dedication and progress, and we are proud of the effort they are putting into becoming stronger, more confident readers. Their hard work is truly paying off.
Fourth Grade News
In science, Mrs. Schaffner‘s fourth graders created an experiment to explore erosion and how it changes Earth’s surface. This helped students recognize landforms and to see how water can slowly change the land. The students did a great job thinking like scientist and making real world connections.

Team Tressel Fitness Challenge
The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is here! Eastwood Elementary students in 3rd and 4th grade will be taking part in the new and improved 30-day challenge to help our students take ownership of their health by setting goals, tracking progress, and forming daily habits around fitness, nutrition, and sleep.
Right now, one in three Ohio high school students is overweight or obese, and this challenge aims to change that by implementing small changes and healthy habits one day at a time.
All students in grades 3 and 4 will receive their own challenge workbook where they can write their goals and track progress. We encourage families to join in and help their students reach for gold! Look for more information to be sent home next week on the days when your 3rd or 4th-grade student has physical education class!
