Message from Principal Pearson
Dear Howard Elementary Families,
March is Read Across America Month, a time when we celebrate the joy of reading and the importance of literacy. Throughout the month, students will be engaging in various reading-related activities and events.
From March 3-7, we celebrate Classified Appreciation Week, honoring the dedication and hard work of our educational assistants, office staff, kitchen staff, and custodial team. I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for their invaluable contributions to our school community. We are grateful for everything they do.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Best regards,
Ms. Pearson
Assistant Principal Mrs. Elrod
Hello Howard Families,
I am so excited that it’s nearly March! One of my favorite weeks of the entire school year is our Classified Appreciation Week, which happens the first full week in March. This year, from March 3rd - 7th, our Howard Classified Staff will be honored by our teachers and administrators.
You might wonder who at Howard is considered a classified employee. These staff members are anyone who isn’t responsible for teaching an entire class. While our teachers and admin will be spoiling them over the course of this week, one thing that would make it even more special is if your student can say or write something thoughtful or appreciative that week.
Just in case you’d like a list of our fabulous classified staff, here it is:
Ms. Nora & Ms. Bri - Office Staff
Ms. DJ & Mr. Adam – Room 3 Support/Playground Supervisors
Ms. Mautz & Ms. Rico - SpEd Assistants
Ms. Kathy, Ms. Rhonda, & Mr. Josiah - Kindergarten Support
Ms. Robin and Ms. Vanessa - Lunch and Playground Supervisors
Ms. Jessica - Media Tech
Ms. Baird & Ms. Cabrera - ELD Assistants
Ms. Jamie & Mr. Jacob - Custodians
Mr. Way, Ms. Christy, & Mr. Cary - Playground Supervisors
Ms. Rachel - 1st-grade support/Playground Supervisor
Ms. Sarah, Ms. Tamara, & Ms. Samantha - Cafeteria Supervisors
Ms. Beth, Ms. Colleen, Ms. Tina, & Ms. Karina - CARE Support
Ms. Jaelin and Ms. Helene - Preschool Assistant
Please help us to spoil these wonderful ladies and gentlemen. We could not run the school without their support and kindness! They are the backbone of our school, and every day is a better day because of them!
Kindergarten Launch Wednesday, April 9th!
SEL Spotlight
Hello Howard Families,
February was quite a month in SEL land! Our character trait focus was on honesty, February was kindness month district-wide, and it was black history month. We focused on all three of these topics here at Howard. We had a lot of learning around how to be and show kindness, and on how being honest is how we can be kind. We also learned about the contributions our black community has made in our society and world. This is a great time to ask your child or children about what they learned in any of these topics!
Coming up in March our character trait focus is on cooperation. Cooperation means working together to reach shared goals. Examples of cooperation in school may be working with a small group in math to solve a problem or complete a project. On the playground, cooperation may look like taking turns on the swings, or playing a game of soccer while showing good sportsmanship. Cooperation at home might look like kiddos pitching in to help clean up after dinner, making the bed when they get up, or helping to keep the house clean for the whole family. Something to think about and do: Ask your child in what ways they can cooperate (work together) at home, so you all have a nice place to live?
HEALTH CURRICULUM INFORMATION
The Medford School District adopted a health curriculum titled "The Great Body Shop". This curriculum aligns closely with Oregon Health Standards and is designed to provide students with essential knowledge about safety, respect, and healthy relationships.
In the link below you will find information about the curriculum and the locations of potential sensitive material within the curriculum as it aligns to the health standards. Because the standards will be addressed in the "latter half of the school year," it is important that you familiarize yourselves with these standards ahead of time.
If you have any questions about the curriculum or wish to review the materials, please contact Ms. Pearson at deirdre.pearson@medford.k12.or.us or visit the MSD website Health Curriculum page.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us provide a safe and well-rounded education for your child
