BAS Bond and BHS Specific Information
As you all know at this point, Brighton High School currently has a bond proposal that will be on the ballot as part of a May 5th election. This bond had the ability to impact all of the schools within the district, but has specific implications for BHS as well.
In addition, there are informational flyers in the Main Office and poster boards in the front vestibule and individuals enter the building outlining important information on the bond, as well as building specific information about what changes are proposed. If you have more questions, we recently received a BHS-specific bond board that not only outlines bond basics if you have questions or if anyone reaches out to you, but also has BHS-specific details about projects included in the bond application. The BHS-specific Bond Board can be found here.
In Dr. Outlaw's newsletter this week, he included a link to register to vote and another to request an absentee ballot. For those that are residents, you can request an absentee ballot now and begin voting absentee as early as March 26. Those voting in-person may do so on May 5th.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions and I will do the best I can to answer them for you.
BHS PTO Meeting Information - Next Meeting Tuesday, April 7th @ 7:30 am
The next PTO Meeting will be on Tuesday, April 7th @ 7:30 am in the Main Office Conference Room. All are welcome!
BHS PTO is an active part of our students' overall high school experience. In addition to others, the BHS PTO proudly supports the following activities throughout the school year: Registration, educational student assemblies, Academic Letter and Academic Letter Lunches, the Academic Wall, Freshmen class activities, staff appreciation events, financial support for student-run after school clubs and organizations, and the Senior Picnic.
WIN Work Readiness Testing - Wednesday, April 8th
On Wednesday, April 8th, all Juniors will be completing the WIN Work Readiness Assessment (replacing the ACT WorkKeys test students have normally taken). It will be a normal day for all 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students. Juniors are NOT being dismissed for the day after testing. You student may not be aware of where they need to go on Wednesday for testing. Testing information is provided below:
- Juniors with last names A - K will report to the Aux Gym
- Juniors with last names L - Z will report to the Fieldhouse
- All Juniors need to be in their assigned locations by 7:30 am to begin the testing process
- Students should bring a photo ID and something to write with. They can bring their own calculator, but there is also one embedded in the math portion so they do not need to bring one if they don't have one
- Students testing with accommodations will receive an email on Monday, 4/6 that will also include their parents letting them know where they will be testing on Wednesday. They will also receive a hard copy slip on Tuesday, 4/7 sharing the same information. All non-accommodated testers will receive their testing location information via email on Monday, 4/6.
- We recommend Juniors dress in layers for testing as there may be temperature variations in the rooms based on where they are testing.
- All Juniors will be taking C Lunch on this day
Lunch Adjustments for April 8th Based on WIN Testing
Given the schedule for WIN Work Readiness Testing and the timing of the test, ALL Juniors will need to take C Lunch on this day. As a result, we needed to adjust lunch schedules to balance lunches. This information has already been shared with impacted teachers. Changes are provided below:
A Lunch:
- Will include all teachers/departments regularly scheduled for A lunch EXCEPT Mr. Elsey Elsey and special education teachers who will move to C Lunch
- English Department will take A lunch (instead of their regularly scheduled C lunch)
B Lunch:
- Will include all teachers/departments regularly scheduled for B lunch
- Social Studies Department will take B lunch (instead of their regularly scheduled C lunch)
C Lunch:
- All Juniors
- Miss Haupt, Mr. Doupe and Mrs. Renicker will remain on C due to scheduling conflicts
- Special Education Department who regularly have A lunch will have C lunch
- Mr. Elsey's PE class who regularly has A lunch will have C lunch

One of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your student’s success is by regularly checking their grades and progress through ParentConnect. If you have never accessed ParentConnect, it gives you the ability to stay up to date on your student’s grades, assignments, and attendance. Even a few minutes each week can make a big difference. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your student’s growth and success.
In case you do not have the link at your disposal, you can access ParentConnect below:
In order to log in, you will need a PIN and password. If you never received these items, or need them provided to you, you can contact pc@brightonk12.com and they will be able to assist you.
*If you/your student cannot see all of the assignments, including missing assignments, make sure you check the box "Show All" that should be located in the upper right corner of the assignments section.*
Make Up Attendance Opportunities
We have been reaching out to students who have already exceeded the allowable number of absences for the 2nd Semester. As you are hopefully aware, students are allowed to miss 9 days in a class prior to having to make up any time. Certain types of absences do not count against this total (i.e. school business absences, medically excused absences with a doctor's note, funerals, college visits, etc.). As a reminder, students can make up attendance in a variety of different ways, including:
- Getting extra help with a teacher after school (teacher verifies time spent with the student) for any of their classes
- Detention
- Saturday School
- Coming in on a day that would have otherwise been an off day for students, but administration is present (i.e. Martin Luther King Junior Day, Records Days, etc.)
- Monday, April 6th from 9 am to 3 pm in the Media Center
- Tuesday, April 7th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
- Wednesday, April 8th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
- Thursday, April 9th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
PSAT/SAT Student Guides
Below you will find the student guides for the upcoming Spring standardized testing for this year.
These student guides provide a wealth of information that you and/or your student(s) may find helpful in advance of the upcoming testing. Information provided in these guides includes, but is not limited to, basic test information (sections and testing times), practice test opportunities, important information for both before the test and after, scoring information, score reporting, as well as testing policies and procedures. One of the important policies to be aware of is that students are NOT allowed to access any electronic devices from the time the test starts until the time it ends, including during any breaks that are a part of the testing session. This includes phones, tablets, smart watches, etc.
Initial Spring Standardized Testing Information
We have a brief update regarding this spring's standardized testing schedule. Brief details are provided below, with a more comprehensive outline attached. Full details will be provided as the dates get closer.
Wednesday, April 8th - 11th graders will complete the WIN Work Readiness Assessment (will be split between the Aux Gym and the Fieldhouse). It will be a normal day of school for all 9th, 10th, and 12th graders.
Wednesday, April 15th - No school for Seniors. All 11th graders will be completing their Spring SAT Assessment and all 9th and 10th graders will be completing their Spring PSAT Assessment.
Schedule and additional details on this Spring's testing can be found here.
3rd Quarter Make Up Exam Schedule
We have been receiving an increase in the number of questions from students and families about what they should do if they are planning to miss any of these exams for any reason. The best advice I can give is to have your student communicate with their teacher early. They can ask if they can take their exam early so they don't have to take it as soon as they come back from Spring Break, but it is not a requirement that teachers allow them to do so. In addition to coordinating this directly with their teacher, we will also have the following make up opportunities available the week we get back from Spring Break:
- Monday, April 6th (Records Day which means no school for students) - Make Up Testing from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Media Center (need to start testing by 2 pm)
- If your student needs to make up attendance time, they can also do so on this day between 9 am and 3 pm
- Tuesday, April 7th - Make Up Testing from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
- Wednesday, April 8th - Make Up Testing from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
- Thursday, April 9th - Make Up Testing from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the Media Center
Upcoming Academic Letter Lunch - Friday April 10th
Invitations have been sent out (sent Friday, March 13th) to both eligible students and parents for our Spring Academic Letter Lunch. The Spring Academic Letter Lunch will take place on Friday, April 10th and will take place during a student's assigned lunch. We will have pizza available for students receiving their Academic Letter this semester. If you are planning to come have lunch with your students and they would prefer food from another location, you are more than welcome to bring it with you!
As a reminder, in order for a student to earn their Academic Letter, they must have a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher for 2 consecutive semesters. This means only current 10th, 11th, and 12th graders would be eligible to earn an Academic Letter this year.

These notifications will go out once per week (on Thursdays to provide students with an opportunity to connect with teachers as needed prior to the weekend) and will include the following message. These notifications are designed to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that we are partnering and proactively working to support our students and their success at BHS!

Senior Survivor 2026
Senior Survivor Week 2026 Information
The teams have been announced for this year's Senior Survivor and they are excited to start raising money for 2 great charities: The Children's Healing Center of Southeast Michigan and Fund A Life. Teams are currently selling t-shirts and recruiting sponsors. If you have or know of a business that is interested in sponsoring, please email us at nhs@brightonk12.com. For more information about the teams and how you can get involved, please visit our Senior Survivor page: https://bit.ly/BHS_Senior_Survivor
This year's logo can be found here (square or rectangular). Please feel free to share out as you see fit!
Senior Survivor 2026 Team Information
We now have our Senior Survivor 2026 teams for this year! They have received their orientation and you may also see them out and about selling t-shirts in preparation for Senior Survivor 2026. In case you are wondering who the teams are, here is the team information.
You will note there are currently 11 teams, which is more than we have ever had! 7 of these teams are locked in, with the other 4 battling for our last 2 seats. We are excited about the opportunity to involve more students than ever before in this year's Senior Survivor.
Brighton Area Schools – Transportation Bus Stop Change Requests
Bus stop change requests can be found on the Brighton Area Schools website under Departments → Transportation.
- In-district students: Please complete the “Alternate Destination” form. Students are permitted up to two (2) different bus stops.
- Out-of-district (School of Choice) students: Please complete the “Out of District/School of Choice” form.
Please allow a three (3) day processing window for transportation staff to review, assign, and communicate any approved changes to both families and drivers.
Important Reminders
- We cannot accommodate “one-time” bus changes for last-minute situations such as playdates, projects, or sports rides.
- In the case of a true emergency, please contact your building principal. The principal will determine if the situation qualifies and will coordinate directly with the transportation department if needed.
Why Advance Requests Are Required
There are several important reasons why same-day or one-time changes cannot be approved:
- Bus route sheets and student rosters are legal documents specifying authorized riders and stops.
- Drivers must be notified in advance of any approved changes.
- Routes may need adjustment, requiring time to inform all affected families.
- All changes must include proper written documentation signed by a legal guardian.
- In the event of an incident, drivers must have documented authorization for any deviation.
- Staffing limitations may prevent last-minute accommodations.
- Some buses are at capacity, requiring route adjustments to safely add riders.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us keep student transportation safe and efficient.
2026 Unified Youth Sports Camp - Save the Date
We are excited to share that we will be hosting our second annual Unified Youth Sports Camp (grades JK-8) on May 5th from 5:00–7:00 pm at Brighton High School! This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate inclusion and bring students of all abilities together through fun, engaging activities.
We would greatly appreciate your support in helping us spread the word to families you may know within the community. Your assistance in sharing this information through social media or other communication channels would help ensure that as many students as possible can take part in this meaningful experience.
I have attached a flyer with a QR code attached for students and families to register. Please let us know if you have any questions. We have somewhat of a quick turnaround after break if students want to get a t-shirt. Students must register by April 13th.
Thank you for your continued support in promoting inclusive opportunities for all students!
Prospective New Families Newsletter
You may or may not be aware, but the enrollment and school of choice windows are now open for the 2026-27 school year! It is important to keep our enrollment steady, or even increasing to allow us to maximize our offerings for our students and set them up for future success. If you know of anyone who will be new to BHS next year or who may be considering BHS as an option for enrollment next year, we have an excellent resource you can share with them. It is provided below. Also, feel free to connect them with us if they have any questions or are looking to set up an opportunity to tour the building!

Tutoring Options at BHS
National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.
In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.
The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.

Senior Update from Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Miner
Please see the message below from Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Miner, the Grade Level Principal and Counselor for this year's Senior class:
Seniors & Families!
It is hard to believe that we have a little over two months left until Graduation! Time is starting to pick up speed for me and I heard that seniors have 41 more days of school left! Exciting, proud, happy, sad, and sentimental are all colliding as get closer and closer to graduation.
Please see the important information and updates below. As always, please reach out to me with questions and concerns.
Grades
We are nearing the end of the third quarter and we have fourth quarter left to go! Exams are next week, so please ensure that your senior is working as hard as possible to finish strong!!
If your senior currently has an E in one or more of their classes, you will be receiving a separate email from me.
Attendance
Attendance continues to be a focus of administration and staff, so please make sure you are attending school regularly and on time. If you have major health or medical issues that are prohibiting your senior from attending, please make sure you communicate so we can acquire documentation so that those absences do not count against your totals in our attendance policy. Regular attendance is a proven way to keep students on the right path with their academics and studies.
If your senior has more than 9 absences in a particular class, you will be receiving a separate email from me.
MVS/Online Classes
If your senior is enrolled in online classes, please make sure that this class does not fall off of their radar as we near the midpoint of the semester.
If your senior is not on track in their progress or failing an online class, you will receive a separate email from me.
Senior Exam Opt Out
Seniors have the OPPORTUNITY to earn exemption from their second semester exams. Here are the parameters:
- Each class has the possibility for exemption
- In order to be exempt from an exam in a particular class, seniors must meet the following criteria:
- Post a B+ or better with 3 or less tardies AND absences in that class
- Post a B or better with 2 or less tardies AND absences in that class
- If you have any additional questions on this policy or individual questions or concerns, please email me!
- The ONLY absences that are not counted in this are those with an official medical note, court date, college visits, school business, or family funeral.
Behavior and Graduation
Effective today and going forward, any behavioral issue that is considered major and warrants corresponding disciplinary action will jeopardize the senior’s ability to attend graduation and events. Examples of this would be possession or use of controlled substances at school or at school events, physical fights or assault, etc. While this is not an exhaustive list, I want to be very clear that we are keeping a high expectation of behavior for our seniors as we move closer and closer to graduation.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership with this and if you have any questions, please let me know.

Scranton Middle School Presents Beetlejuice Jr. - April 24–26, 2026
It’s showtime! Scranton Middle School Musical Theatre invites audiences to step into the strange and unusual world of Beetlejuice Jr., the wildly entertaining musical based on the Broadway hit and the beloved Tim Burton film, with four performances April 24–26, 2026, at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts.
Beetlejuice Jr. tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a bright and unusual teenager fascinated with the whole “being dead thing.” When Lydia meets a recently deceased couple and a mischievous demon named Beetlejuice, chaos and hilarity quickly follow. Filled with energetic musical numbers, outrageous humor, and a delightfully spooky story, the production promises a fun and unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.
More than 60 Scranton Middle School students are involved in bringing this production to life, both on stage and behind the scenes. Students have spent months rehearsing, learning choreography, designing sets, and preparing costumes as part of the school’s growing musical theatre program.
Tickets — $16 each — are available for the following performances at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts:
Beetlejuice Jr. Showtimes
● Friday, April 24 @ 7 p.m.
● Saturday, April 25 @ 2 p.m.
