Hornet Families,

We are down to our last weekend of summer break before the new school year begins! After a wonderful night at open house, all of the staff here at the school are excited to get students back into the building full time!

We all know the first day of school is always filled with excitement, anticipation, and nervousness for both students and parents. To help ease some of the nervousness, please take a look at our First Day of School Plan that can be found below.

As in the past, we will continue with our Hermosa Family Newsletter at the end of each week to keep our families informed on the events and happenings here at the school. If you ever have additional questions, please feel free to call the school office at 605-255-4345.

Before School Procedure (SEE MAP BELOW FOR DROP-OFF)

• All students can enter the playground at 7:30 AM.
• PARENTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE PLAYGROUND DURING THE 1ST WEEK OF SCHOOL.
• Students riding in vehicles will be dropped off along the sidewalk on the South side of the school.
• Students who are walking to school, especially on Highway 40, need to use the crosswalk and walk down the East side of the school.
• Elementary (PreK-4th) will remain on the playground when dropped off.
• Middle School (5th-8th) will enter the building from the playground and go straight to the cafeteria for breakfast.
• The morning bell rings at 7:40 and students on the playground will line-up.
• At 7:45 students are in the building and class begins at 7:50.

During School

• If you need to contact your child for any reason, please call the school office at 605-255-4345.
• If you need to make different plans for after school pick-up, please call as soon as possible so the office staff can contact the classroom teacher.
• ALL VISITORS MUST STOP INTO THE OFFICE TO CHECK-IN AND GET A VISTORS PASS.

After School Procedure (SEE MAP BELOW FOR PICK-UP)

• Elementary (PreK-4th) is dismissed and walked to the area in front of the main entrance at 3:30.
• Middle School (5th-8th) is dismissed at 3:35.
• All Kid Stop students will be walked to the cafeteria by their classroom teacher at their dismissal time.
• All students waiting for their ride in front of the school will remain there until their ride is parked along the pick-up area or their ride is parked in a parking spot and walks to the entrance area to pick them up.
• PLEASE NOTE, IF YOU ARE PULLING INTO THE PICK-UP AREA, PLEASE PULL ALL THE WAY FORWARD WHILE WAITING FOR YOUR STUDENT.
• Students should be picked up by 3:40, students who are not picked up by 3:40 will be taken to the vestibule/office and parents/guardians will be called.

Lydia and Jacob raised money on their own this summer to purchase school supplies for students in need. They even donated their winnings from the Custer County Fair! Great job Lydia and Jacob of putting others before yourself!

The staff at Hermosa School want to send a special thanks to Tyler and Margo Carroll for their generosity as they purchased and donated a back-to-school book for all preschool through 3rd graders!

A big thank you to Black Hills Electric Cooperative for their generous donation as they dropped off a pallet of bottled water for our staff and students for the 2025-2026 school year.
