KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Happy Friday, Explorer Families!
Thank you for attending our Curriculum Nights this week. If you were unable to attend, teachers will share the information from the evening in their weekly email blasts today.
We recently received our facilities inspection score from the district team, and Northwood remains at the top of both our zone and the district with another excellent score! We are fortunate to have our head custodian, Mr. Mack Ervin, leading this work, and with our afternoon custodian, Mr. Michael Permar, on the team as well. We also have an outstanding evening crew from American Facility Services. Together, they help ensure that our campus truly shines. Kudos to the entire department!
Be sure to check out the details below about the fun Piggy Palooza festivities planned by our Northwood PTA for the week of September 14-18. The week concludes with Family Fun Night on Friday evening!
Enjoy the Labor Day weekend! Take time to rest and recharge after a busy start to the school year and watch a lot of football!
With gratitude,
Heather Q. Rucker, Principal
MS. FRANCESCHI, MRS. GARDELLA & MS. SIMS' AU SUPPORT EXPLORERS
Our students have spent the first few weeks of school learning classroom routines, getting to know their teachers, and building friendships with classmates. These experiences are helping create a strong foundation for a successful school year, and we are already seeing students grow in confidence and independence.
On Tuesday, students enjoyed several visits from our therapy dog, Sadie. A fan favorite, Sadie brings joy to learning and brightens the day for everyone she meets!
We are also off to a great start in our first instructional unit, which focuses on reviewing key skills from the previous school year. Students have been working hard, demonstrating perseverance, and showing enthusiasm as they strengthen their academic foundations and prepare for new learning.

ATTENDANCE AT NORTHWOOD: YOUR PRESENCE MATTERS!
September is Attendance Awareness Month. We want all students here at Northwood ES to be On Time, On Target, and On Track!
- Being On Time means that we are here in the building every day by 7:40 am.
- Being On Target means that we attend school regularly to learn everything we need to know. Here at Northwood ES, we Strive for 95! That means that we come to school 95% of the time!
- Being On Track means that we are achieving academic success through good attendance.
Remember, your involvement as parents and guardians is an essential factor in creating a positive and engaging school environment. Together, we can foster an atmosphere where students are excited to come to school, engage in learning, and build a foundation for a successful future.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in ensuring the success of your child's education. For more information on FCS attendance policies please visit the FCS Attendance Matters Website or reach out to our school social worker, Patrick Hartigan, MSW at hartigan@fultonschools.org or 404 213 7451.
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week's AVID goal is:
K: My goal is to have a grown-up check my folder each night.
1st - 5th - My goal is to write my homework in my agenda and have a grown-up check it each night.
OUR CLINIC CLOSET NEEDS CLOTHES
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes. Our clinic closet is in need of boys bottoms and boys underwear, but we appreciate all donations. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk. Thanks!
DISMISSAL CHANGES? MAKE THEM IN PICKUP PATROL
Northwood has partnered with PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately and safely dismissed each day.
If you need to change how your child should be dismissed, you should submit that information via PickUp Patrol before 1:30 pm on the day of the change, and our staff will be notified. We no longer accept dismissal requests via email or paper notes. Please do not email teachers directly.
All dismissal information and changes must be entered into PickUp Patrol.
If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Robertson at Northwood’s front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org.

CAFETERIA NEWS
ICE CREAM & BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Your child will be recognized at school on his/her birthday, with an announcement on Explorervision and a special birthday pencil. Please do not send cake, cupcakes, balloons, party favors, or party invitations to school as these will not be distributed. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school you may purchase ice cream from our cafeteria for your child’s class.
- Please email your Explorer’s teacher to find out how many students are in their class.
- Email our Cafeteria Manger Rosa Gutierrez at gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, to place your order at least TWO FULL WEEKS IN ADVANCE of your Explorer’s birthday.
- Ice cream is still $1 each for birthdays. The simplest way to handle the cost is to have money on your Explorers account via MySchoolBucks.
CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
Did you know? Our school community has a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account will be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Mrs. Rosa Gutierrez, our cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Mrs. Gutierrez, gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
LUNCHTIME REMINDERS
Parents may eat lunch with students after the first two weeks of school - starting August 17th. Teachers eat with the students during the first week, and the students are learning the routine the second week. We also encourage nutritious lunches; therefore sodas, canned drinks, fast food, candy, energy drinks, etc. are discouraged. We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing these items to school or sending them in lunchboxes.
