Otter News - August 2026
River Oaks Elementary 2026-2027
Dear River Oaks Families,
We have had a fantastic start to the new school year! Our hallways and classrooms are filled with excitement, learning, and lots of Hustle and Heart!
Our students have done an outstanding job settling into their routines and learning our schoolwide expectations. Each day, they are learning what it means to be a River Oaks Otter and to demonstrate our ROES values: Respect, Opportunity, Excellence, and Service.
Our theme this year, “Hustle and Heart Sets Us Apart,” reminds us that success is about both effort and character.
HUSTLE means giving our best effort, working hard, persevering when something is challenging, and always being ready to learn.
HEART means showing kindness, caring for others, making good choices, and helping make River Oaks a place where everyone feels welcome.
When our students combine Hustle + Heart, amazing things can happen!
Throughout the year, we will continue encouraging our students to live our ROES every day. This past week the students attended assemblies to review our schoolwide expectations.
R — RESPECT We show kindness, listen to others, take care of our school, and treat everyone with respect.
O — OPPORTUNITY We take advantage of opportunities to learn, grow, try new things, and become better each day.
E — EXCELLENCE We give our best effort and take pride in our learning. Excellence doesn't mean everything has to be perfect—it means we keep working and growing!
S — SERVICE We look for ways to help others and make a positive difference in our classroom, school, and community.
We are currently completing our beginning-of-the-year assessments. These assessments give our teachers important information about what students already know and what they are ready to learn next.
The goal is not for students to know every answer. Instead, these assessments help teachers identify each student's strengths and areas for growth so they can plan instruction that meets the needs of all learners.
As we review this information, our teachers will use it to create meaningful learning opportunities, provide additional support when needed, and challenge students who are ready to take the next step.
We are incredibly proud of how well our students have started the year. They are learning expectations, building relationships, developing routines, and showing us every day what it means to be a River Oaks Otter!
Thank you, families, for your continued partnership and support. When our students, families, teachers, and staff work together, we create the very best opportunities for our children.
Here's to a wonderful year of learning, growing, kindness, HUSTLE, and HEART!

River Oaks Readers,
The Learning Commons has been alive with activity. Students are checking out books, thinking and sharing about our interactive read alouds, informational (non-fiction) texts, and photographs. Students can check out two books a week during library time if they have returned their books. I am in the hall in front of the media center to circulate books for students who forget to bring their book on library day and for our voracious readers. Students are encouraged to find books that interest them. If your student comes home with a book that may be too difficult now, I encourage you to read with them or have them return it the following day and we will find the just right book together. Our goal is for student reading stamina and Lexile level to increase.
My love for literacy has led me back to the library. I am excited to serve the students, staff, and families of River Oaks Elementary. If you have not had a chance to stop by the library, please visit next time you are on campus.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Bryant, Librarian
