Role of the Counselor
What do Professional School Counselors Do?
Mrs. Martinez and Mrs. Shelton are here to help our Lobos achieve academic success by enhancing their social, emotional, and mental well being. How do we help exactly? We have 4 major components to our program. Please visit the NISD Guidance and Counseling website for more information.
- Guidance Curriculum: We provide guidance lessons in grades PK-12th that facilitate student growth and development in the areas of educational, career, personal, and social development. Guidance lessons/activities are based on 4 different content areas: Intrapersonal Effectiveness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Personal Health and Safety, Graduation Requirements and Post Secondary Information.
- Responsive services: We intervene or assist with or on behalf of those students in PreK-12th whose personal circumstances, concerns, or problems are threatening to interfere with their healthy educational, personal, social, career and/or educational development.
- Individual Planning: We guide students to plan, monitor, and manage their own educational, career, personal, and social development.
- System Support: We manage activities that help us achieve the delivery of a high quality counseling program, and service which indirectly benefits students.
Small Group Counseling: Small Groups will begin soon! Please reach out to teachers or counselors for a referral!
This fall the counselors will begin small groups in mid September. Part of our responsive services calls for groups that target student concerns developmentally, socially, or academically.
The following is a list of topics (but not limited to) of our fall small groups sessions:
- Managing Feelings
- Friendships
- Self-Confidence
- Military Family Changes
- Family Changes
Teachers, parents, and students can refer themselves for our small groups. Permission slips will be sent out after our first session. Groups are created based on the need of the grade level and usually have a minimum of 3 students. Each will group will meet 6-8 sessions depending on the progress of the group.
