Good afternoon and welcome to the Week 5 school newsletter for Term 1.

Another fun week here at school, I hope you have enjoyed the week off homework and have managed to take a little time to relax! I managed to get out with a couple of mates to watch the first game of the footy last night. Can I ask that you all keep Miss Ryan in your thoughts as she comes to terms with how good Carlton are not going to be this season… 😆

Grass Recovery

After being consoled by a couple of parents this week, I just want you all to know that we are starting to make a plan for the grass in the centre of the school. Over the school holiday period, a controller in the junior play area unfortunately went unnoticed for over a week during a very hot spell. We had been trying to help it recover; however, combined with the recent hot weather and the high level of foot traffic from our students, the grass has become quite worn and stressed (It’s a sand pit!). We are currently exploring practical solutions to allow the area some time to recover and regenerate, while still ensuring students have safe and enjoyable spaces to play. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to restore this much-loved part of our playground. It is likely we will need to fence it off in the coming weeks.

Swimming Carnival

We look forward to our Year 3–6 Swimming Carnival next Friday 13th March which is always a highlight on the school calendar. The day promises plenty of energy, friendly competition and house spirit, as students challenge themselves in the pool and cheer on their classmates. Events like this are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate participation, perseverance and teamwork, while enjoying a healthy dose of fun.

We still need another 7 parent helpers so if you are able to help out on the day, please email the office. We thank our staff and parent volunteers in advance for their support in ensuring the day runs smoothly and safely, and we look forward to a fantastic carnival atmosphere.

Book Fair

Our School Book Fair was a wonderful success this week, creating great excitement among the students – last day on Monday! We are sincerely grateful to our dedicated organisers who generously gave their time and energy to set up, manage and pack away the event so smoothly. Thank you also to our families for your enthusiastic support - every purchase helps to place new books and resources into our classrooms and library. Your support truly makes a difference and helps us continue to nurture a vibrant reading culture within our school community.

Naplan Years 3 and 5

Next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy). NAPLAN provides a snapshot of student progress in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy, and is just one part of a much broader assessment picture. We encourage families to help their child approach the week calmly and confidently. The most important supports are simple ones: ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, arrives at school on time, and is reassured that this is simply an opportunity to show what they know. Remind them that effort matters more than perfection, and that they are well prepared. A calm, positive message from home makes a significant difference to how children experience the week, so thank you for your anticipated efforts.

And finally, the Drive-through…

Our new Drive-Through and carpark marking has been working really well! I can’t thank people enough for slowing down and looking out for our community. Just a reminder that there is a large ‘No Stopping’ section on the corner as you turn into the front of the school. Please keep this clear at all times.

Pedestrians need to walk across and people using the blue bays at the front can also get around the line if it is clear. Thanks a heap!

Have an amazing weekend!

Wellness Week

This week was WELLNESS WEEK at St Bernadette’s, a time to nurture the wellbeing of our whole community. Throughout the week, students took part in activities that promoted positive mental health, kindness, gratitude, physical activity and connection with others. Student exchanged Jars of Joy with their Buddy Class and Pre-Primary to Year 6 joined together to create a virtual Friendometer on the oval! All students were gifted with a fridge magnet to display at home to help them remember the Friendship Facts and to use the Friendometer to reflect on our relationships and friendships at home. For ways to use these resources with your children, please make sure you sign up for a free parent membership via https://urstrong.com/parents/ .

Wellbeing Week is a reminder that learning flourishes when we feel safe, supported and balanced. We look forward to continuing to embrace simple practices that help us slow down, care for ourselves and one another, and strengthen the positive culture that makes our school such a special place to belong.

Last minute messages to students

We know plans can change, but passing along last-minute messages to students at the end of the day is tricky and not always possible. To help keep things calm, safe, and on time, please let your child know about any transportation or dismissal changes before school starts or have an agreed back up plan (eg.If I'm not at the classroom, please go to kiss & drop)

If however, something urgent comes up during the day, please call the front office as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to help.

In the Catholic tradition, our parish and school are closely connected.

The parish, led by Father Giovanni, provides spiritual leadership and is responsible for ensuring we nurture students’ faith alongside academic learning. The school supports the parish by helping children grow in Catholic values, preparing them for sacraments, and encouraging family participation in parish life.

It’s essentially a partnership — the parish is the faith community, and the school is one of its key ministries. For more information about our Parish, please click here:
