Our Fall Conferences will be held September 30 – October 2. A SignUpGenius link has been shared for you to choose a time that works best for your family. If none of the available times fit your schedule, please don’t hesitate to email me so we can find another option before or after school.

Conferences are such an important opportunity for us to connect as parent and teacher to celebrate your child’s growth and discuss how we can continue supporting them this year. I truly value this partnership and look forward to meeting with each of you!

Sniffles vs. Sick Days Sniffles vs. Sick Days

We know the sniffles and coughs make their way around this time of year! Please don’t worry about sending your child if they just have a runny nose or a little cough — that’s all part of being around friends. We do ask that students stay home if they have a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, or if they truly feel too unwell to learn. Otherwise, being in class each day is so important, since even one day away can mean missing a lot of learning and fun. Thank you for helping us keep kids healthy while also making the most of our school days together!

5th Grade Leadership Opportunitites! 5th Grade Leadership Opportunitites!

We know how important this year is for our 5th graders, especially as Heritage celebrates its 25th anniversary and final year before consolidation. While our students won’t have the traditional 6th grade experience here, we are committed to making sure they have meaningful leadership opportunities and those special “lasts” that come with being the oldest students in the building.

We’re excited to share that this year our 5th graders will be able to apply for and participate in several different Leadership Teams designed to build responsibility, confidence, and community:

  1. Assembly Team – Helping direct classes and even speaking on the microphone to energize and lead the school.

  2. Transition Team – Working alongside pairing schools to give input and ideas from a student perspective on the transition.

  3. Event Engineers – Assisting with set-up and support during events such as Mornings with Moms, Fund Run, and Field Day.

  4. Welcoming Committee – Greeting students at the doors, wearing safety vests, and providing tours to new students.

  5. Buddy Activity Leads – Planning and leading activities with our 1st grade buddy classrooms.

In addition, starting second semester, all 5th graders will have the opportunity to participate in morning announcements, sharing this tradition with our 6th graders until their year here concludes.

We are so excited to provide our 5th graders with these leadership opportunities that will allow them to shine, build confidence, and leave a lasting impact on Heritage. More information about applications and assignments will be coming soon.

Thank you for your partnership as we make this final year one full of pride, joy, and lasting memories for our 5th graders!

We’re thrilled to announce our upcoming field trip to Young AmeriTowne, taking place on Tuesday, October 8! Information went home yesterday on a yellow sheet in Thursday Folders. Please review it closely to see how you or family members can participate as volunteers.

Young AmeriTowne is a hands-on learning experience that introduces students to the world of business and civic engagement. During the visit, students step into the roles of entrepreneurs, workers, and consumers in a simulated “town.” They earn and manage “Towne Dollars,” explore careers, run businesses, budget, save, and even practice donating to charities—all while learning teamwork, responsibility, and money management.

Key Details:

  • Trip date: Tuesday, October 8

  • Forms and information: on the yellow sheet sent home yesterday in Thursday Folders

  • Volunteer opportunities: please check the details on the form

  • Return forms by: Wednesday, September 11. Lottery drawing will take place on September 12th.

Thanks for helping make this enriching experience possible—we appreciate your involvement and look forward to a fun and educational day!

Outdoor Ed and King Soopers! Outdoor Ed and King Soopers!

Hello 5th Grade Families!

Just a reminder that 5th graders will be going to Outdoor Ed during the Spring of 2026! More details are to come with the trip but we want to make sure you are set up with the King Soopers Community Rewards now, which can be used towards your child’s Outdoor Ed costs.

What you need to do: Make sure your King Soopers card is raising money for Heritage PTO.

Here are steps to set this up:

1. Sign into your digital King Soopers account

2. Click on MY ACCOUNT and select COMMUNITY REWARDS on the left side of the page.

3. If it already shows Heritage Elementary School PTO, you are already signed up and no further action is needed. If you need to sign up, you can search for Heritage Elementary School PTO or use our code JP355. Make sure it shows exactly as written or it won't go to our school.

4. Shop as normal at King Soopers and watch the funds add up!

What to do later: Every quarter you can take a screenshot of your Community Rewards contribution. You can keep track of it yourself or send it to the email address: ptoheritage.outdoored@gmail.com.

You can also request King Soopers to send you your rewards for all of 2025 in a report. This is an easy way to get your totals and we will request this report (or the screen shots) next Spring.

This is a great way to raise money for our school and to help offset some of the Outdoor Ed costs for your family!

If you have any questions, please email ptoheritage.outdoored@gmail.com.

Thank you!

Heritage PTO

What We Are Learning What We Are Learning

Reading

In reading, we’ve been exploring our Essential Question: How can experiencing nature change the way you think about it? To dive into this big idea, students read “A Life in the Woods” about Henry David Thoreau’s time living in the woods, and “Camping with the President”, which tells the story of President Theodore Roosevelt’s camping trip with naturalist John Muir in Yosemite—and how that experience shaped the president’s views on preserving nature.

Along the way, we have been practicing key skills:

  • Cause and Effect – identifying how one event leads to another.

  • Primary vs. Secondary Sources – understanding the difference and recognizing examples.

  • Responding to Text with Evidence – learning how to support answers with quotes and details from the reading.

These texts and skills help students see how powerful real-life experiences with nature can be, and how writers use evidence to share those experiences with others.

Math

In math, we have been focusing on place value with decimals, comparing numbers, and rounding. We’ve spent extra time practicing rounding, and students even learned a poem to help guide them through the steps for rounding both whole numbers and decimals. To make the practice more engaging, students also completed a digital drawing project where they applied their rounding skills in a creative way.

Writing

We’ve been breaking down the ThinkSRSD process step by step using the class penguin essay we drafted together. Students are learning to apply POWER (Plan, Organize, Write, Edit, Revise) and TIDE (Topic introduction, Important evidence, Detailed Examination, Ending) to structure clear, well-supported paragraphs. We’re also practicing typing and formatting to get their writing publication-ready. Students will revise using feedback, and we’ll regrade after revisions to reflect their growth.

Social Studies/Science

Our postcards project turned out wonderful—students showed so much creativity and effort in their designs! Be sure to check out the video below to see their amazing work.

We are also preparing for our upcoming Young AmeriTowne trip on October 8th. More information will be shared with families soon. In class, students are beginning to learn about basic economics and government as part of their preparation for this exciting hands-on experience.
