Updates from Principal Bican
5th Grade Graduation
We are excited to welcome you into our school on Monday, June 1st from 1:30-2:00 for our 5th grade graduation at Meadowview! We wanted to send out a few important reminders for the event:
- Each student is allowed to bring 2 guests to the graduation
- Please do not arrive at school prior to 1:15pm. The seating will not be set up before then because students will be eating lunch in the graduation space, so there is no advantage to arriving before 1:15pm
- We do not intend to check out siblings in other grades for the 5th grade graduation. Many classrooms have special alternate plans in the last 2 days that we don’t want to disrupt
- The graduation is expected to be wrapped up between 2:00 and 2:05. We will then dismiss 5th graders to go get their backpacks and any items they need to bring home from the school year. If you will be bringing your 5th grader home after the event, you should arrange ahead of time to meet them in the cafeteria after they have their items.
- If your 5th grader has a sibling who attends MVES, please plan to have them follow their regular dismissal routine.
Last Day of School Lunch
Our last day of school is Wednesday, June 3 our dismissal time will be at 11am. All students have the opportunity to have a bagged lunch from the kitchen on that day. In order to have enough supplies we ask that families submit a lunch order form before Wednesday, May 20.
You can find the form below or an orange paper copy will be coming home with your student today!
Thank you!

SUN Bucks!
As we look towards the summer months it can sometimes be difficult for families to provide breakfast and lunch for their students. SUN Bucks can help provide groceries to families who qualify.
What are SUN Bucks? – SUN Bucks is a one-time per eligible school-aged child $120 payment to families to aid in buying groceries when school is out for the summer.
Who is eligible? – School-aged children between the ages of 7-17 whose households participate in public assistance programs (MFIP, SNAP, TANF, FDPIR, Foster Care) or children who have an approved application to receive free and reduced meals through the National School Lunch or Breakfast Program.
Families do not need to receive public assistance to obtain SUN Bucks IF they receive free/reduced lunch services.
If a family receives free/reduced lunch, but not public assistance they WILL need a copy of their approved free/reduced school breakfast/lunch application.

Wit and Wisdom Information
Visual Art
Visual art is a meaningful part of your child’s daily reading and writing lessons. By looking closely at paintings, sculptures, and photographs, students build background knowledge, think deeply, and participate in learning—even before they are able to read complex texts independently.
The curriculum pairs works of art with rich reading to help students grow into thoughtful, confident learners.
1. Supporting All Learners
Art gives every child a way into the lesson. Even if a student is still developing reading skills or learning English, they can study an image, notice details, and share ideas. This helps all students feel included, build confidence, and practice speaking and listening in a supportive environment.
2. Building Knowledge and Vocabulary
Students use art almost like another “text.” The images connect directly to what they are reading and help them better understand topics like history, science, and culture. As they talk about what they see, they also learn new vocabulary to describe details, colors, and ideas.
3. Strengthening Thinking and Writing Skills
Students are taught to slow down and look carefully using routines like “Notice and Wonder.” They learn to explain their thinking by pointing to specific details in an image—just like they use evidence from a book. This kind of thinking helps them become stronger writers, as they learn how authors and artists make purposeful choices.

Attendance Tip!
Getting to school on time is just as important as being at school. Research shows that continued tardiness leads to poor attendance. Many of the most important parts of a student's day happen within the first 15 minutes. This is often when they have a time to socialize with their peers, orient themselves for the day, take care of necessary business, and connect with their teacher before the day starts. Never underestimate the power of the first 15 minutes of school!
End of Day Routine
Please make sure your child's teacher has an accurate, up-to-date plan for your child's dismissal at the end of the day.
When changes are needed, please communicate those changes with your child's teacher prior to the start of the school day. We cannot always guarantee teachers will see emails during the work day (as it depends on the activities they have planned with the students).
For EMERGENCY CHANGES, please communicate with the teacher and call the front office no later than 2pm. Changes to end of day routines are difficult for students and teachers. If at all possible please change YOUR routine instead of your students routine.
