Outside Picnic Space updates!

Thank you to Ms. Weiman, Art Club, Ms. Heuston & Art Honor Society for organizing and executing the painting of our picnic area. This was a collaborative effort where various clubs (Table Top gaming, LGBTQ+IA, National Tech HS &National Math HS to name a few) worked together to theme and paint a table to represent their club. It was really great to see students investing in this area and leaving an imprint on the school. We were also able to get a Little Free Library from the Education Foundation that will be put out in the space and we hope to welcome students for lunch soon!

Field Trip to the Baltimore Museum of Art

On October 22nd, Mrs. Heuston's Photo & Ms. Weiman's studio students too a field trip to the Baltimore Museum of Art to explore the Baltimore Photography Exhibit and a gallery by local artist, Jerrell Gibbs! Both exhibits showed just how powerful art can be in depicting a story or marking history. We are so grateful for the experience and opportunity to celebrate Baltimore art in such a cool way.

Safe Walk to School Day: 10/7/26

We had about 12 community members attend our Safe Walk to School Day. We shared our concerns about students not having a sidewalk on their direct routes to school and the danger that exists because of that. Students shared their first hand experiences and then the group of adults walked from school to Hyde Park Food Lion to experience it themselves. We want to thank the Baltimore County Department of Public Works for taking our concerns so seriously and working with the team doing the sidewalk feasibility study. Please consider joining us on 11/18/26 at 6pm for our next community meeting to learn more about the feasibility study (flyer above).

Shout out to the JUNIORS for having the Highest Attendance Rate so far this school year!

Learn More about the Identify Access Project: Support for Obtaining Birth Certificates

Learn about the Identity Access Project . Right now they are providing in person assistance at The Franciscan Center (101 W. 23 rd Street, Baltimore, MD 21218). Clients can receive birth certificate services on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the FC. This service is available once in a lifetime with the FC and IAP.

People can also go in person to the Office of Vital Records to request a birth certificate. Luckily for our area, the state office is located at Reisterstown Road Plaza. Appointments are needed and can be scheduled here .

The following people can apply for a birth certificate:

  • An individual requesting his/her own birth certificate.
  • A parent named on the certificate.
  • A court-appointed guardian of the individual named on the certificate. A foster care appointment is not acceptable; proof of guardianship must be submitted.
  • A surviving spouse of the individual named on the certificate.
  • A representative of: (1) the individual or a parent named on the certificate; or (2) the court-appointed guardian of the individual named on the certificate. The representative must have a letter signed by the individual, parent, or guardian, and certified by a notary public, stating that the representative has permission to obtain a copy of the certificate.

People can also request a copy of a birth certificate by mail online through VitalChek . It costs more than going in person, and there are currently processing delays at the Department of Vital Records, but this can be a more convenient option for people.

Lastly, here is information on how to request a correction to a birth certificate: Maryland Department of Health Corrections .

New Community Partner: Vanessa's Heart - Meals from the HEART

Meals from the HEART is a new pilot initiative created by Vanessa’s HEART to address food insecurity among low‑income and disadvantaged students and their families in the Essex community. This free meal delivery program provides hot and cold meals directly to households, ensuring that children have access to nutritious food during weekends when school meals are unavailable.

How It Works: Meals from the HEART operates on Friday evenings, twice a month (subject to change). Families sign up through school referrals and meals are delivered straight to the family's home. Because this is a pilot program, participation is limited to the Essex area and slots are capped to ensure quality and consistency. Students are encouraged to sign up early for each delivery cycle to secure their spot. Sign up link for this month: updated link will be sent via talking points Monday Evening.

November’s Career Spotlight: Construction and Advanced Manufacturing

Volunteer at the Shop Small Crawl with the Essex CDC!

Essex CDC is gearing up for an exciting Small Business Saturday celebration on Saturday, November 28, and we're hoping to recruit some enthusiastic, responsible high school students to help us make the day a success!

We're hosting a Shop Small Crawl throughout Essex, featuring pop-up shops, local businesses, and a shuttle transporting shoppers between participating locations. We'd love to have student volunteers serve as our holiday Greeters/Elves, helping welcome visitors and spread some holiday cheer!

Here's what we're looking for:
We need between 8-16 student volunteers to cover four locations throughout the day, with two students assigned to each location per shift.

Volunteer Locations (to be assigned by Staff):
- Essex Park & Ride
- Buon Appetito Restaurant
- CVS on Eastern Boulevard
- The Comfy Cup/Essex CDC at the Essex Gateway Center

Volunteer Shifts:
Morning Shift: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Afternoon Shift: 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Students can volunteer for one shift (2.5 hours) or both shifts (5 hours). All positions will be outdoors, so students should dress appropriately for the weather.

What will the students do?
Our Greeters/Elves will:
- Welcome shoppers and visitors to the Shop Small Crawl.
- Help direct guests to participating businesses, pop-up shops, and shuttle stops.
- Answer basic questions about the event and activities.
- Ring a festive bell whenever the shuttle arrives at their location!
- Help create a fun, friendly, and welcoming holiday atmosphere throughout Essex.

We're asking students to wear red or green, and Essex CDC will provide a festive holiday hat or headband for them to wear during their shift.

Chrissy Erb with Essex CDC will be at CHS on 11/11 to help answer questions and get students signed up to help! Or you can contact alison.maxwell@essexcdc.org for more info.

You will be assigned to one of these roles on the day of your service. All instructions for how to do these roles will be provided. If you have volunteered for Polar Express before and prefer a role, please reach out to Sam Hughes.

How do I start/end my shift?

Please arrive to our main museum campus at the start of your scheduled shift time at 901 W. Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD, 21223. When you walk in our front door, there will be a Volunteer Sign-In station and a Museum staff member will walk you through your role and duties. You will get a volunteer badge and a complimentary meal for all Polar Express Show volunteers . For Kids Craft Table and Set Up volunteers, please plan for your own lunch . Once your shift is complete, head back to the front entrance, sign out, and leave your Volunteer badge at the desk.

What should I wear?

All things festive and in the Holiday spirit are encouraged but not required. There are some roles that are stationed inside and outside, so please be dressed in layers and ready for any weather.

What if I need to cancel, reschedule, or add to my shift?

For all changes in your volunteer time and schedule, please contact out Education Direction, Sam Hughes either by phone or email at 443-627-2393 or shughes@nationalrailroad.org

Attendance/Lateness/Early Dismissal Guidelines Attendance/Lateness/Early Dismissal Guidelines

Attendance: Regular school attendance has a direct impact on a student’s academic success. It is the key to high school graduation and college and career readiness. Research has proven that students who regularly attend school and are on time are more likely to read on grade level, less likely to drop out of school, and more likely to attend all classes that have been assigned to them. Our goal as a school this year is to have 93% attendance or higher!

If a student must be absent from school, the student must present an absence note to the Main Office within 3 days after returning to school. The note must include the student's name, grade level, date of absence, the reason for the absence and must be signed by a parent or guardian. If a student is absent for more than three consecutive days, a doctor/physician's note must also be presented. Notes can be directly uploaded into Focus by using the steps outlined in the Parent Guide below.

Early Dismissal: Requests for early dismissal should be brought to the Main Office before 7:45 AM. The notes must be signed by a parent/guardian with the time and date to be excused, a parent contact number, and the reason for the early dismissal. Unplanned early dismissals must be arranged by the nurse or the Main Office. Students must sign out in the Main Office before leaving school property. Anyone who signs the student out must have a valid ID and be on our list of those who have approval to pick up the student. Therefore, we must have correct contact information on file yearly.

Lateness: To maximize instructional time, it is important that students arrive on time to school. For a student to be counted as present for a full day, the student must be in attendance four hours or more of the school day. All students who arrive after 7:45 AM must sign in at the late check-in kiosk in the main lobby to pick up a late pass before being admitted to class. A signed note from a guardian explaining the reason for the lateness is required at the time of arrival in order for the lateness to be excused. More information on the Lateness procedure below.

Lateness Procedures Lateness Procedures

All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 7:45am. All late students, arriving to school or class after 7:45 AM, are expected to scan in at the Attendance Kiosk. The Attendance Kiosk is in the main entrance vestibule and will be operated by one of our secretaries. Students must have access to their BCPS Student ID barcode to scan in at the kiosk. All student have access to their ID badge via their FOCUS App. Steps for how to access your ID Badge via the Team BCPS Focus App linked below.

Attendance Kiosk Procedure:

· After the 7:45 AM bell, students arriving late, and students still in the halls and not on time for class, will be expected to sign-in at the Attendance Kiosk.

· The Kiosk will scan the student’s ID and mark them as tardy in Focus.

· The Kiosk will provide a “Tardy Slip” that includes the students name, ID, teacher, and room number. The “Tardy Slip” will serve as the students pass to class.
