Superintendent's Community Update
October 5, 2022
A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Parents, Families, and Staff:
Happy October everyone! The 2022-2023 school year is officially underway and believe it or not, midterms start next week! Everyone is getting into the groove- even the TMS warrior who with students was walking through the TMS hallways and posed with Principal Barrios and I for a picture. The warrior was walking the hallways with student guides to share with everyone how his armor through the use of STEM ideas keeps him safe. Many thanks to teacher Brian Russell and our student guides for sharing this fun creative event with Principal Barrios and me on my visit this past week.
I know I may sound like a broken record, but I want to once again stress the importance of establishing a school day routine with your children. That means a consistent bedtime and wake up time on school days. It means establishing regular homework time. And it means talking with your child about how their school day was, what classes they enjoyed, and what classes they’re having a tough time handling. This combination of routine and engagement with your child will pay huge dividends. It will give them consistency and confidence, and provide you with important feedback about how your child is doing in school, and any learning or social/emotional issues that may need to be addressed.
Speaking about parent engagement, we have scheduled our parent-teacher conferences:
● Pell, Friday, December 2 - (12-5 PM) - no school day for Pell students
● Thompson, Thursday, December 1 - (12-5 PM) - no school day for TMS students
● Rogers, Wednesday, November 30- (12-5 PM) - no school day for RHS students
We hope all parents will take advantage of this opportunity to get to know your child’s teachers and to hear how your child is doing in class. While parent-teacher conferences are coming up in a few weeks, we want everyone to know that you can contact your child’s principal, guidance counselors, and teachers at any time. They’re eager for parent feedback and ready to address any academic or behavior related questions/concerns you may have.
Have a great week everyone!
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Sinceramente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendente

Midterms Begin Next Week
For many students, midterm exams will begin next week. Make sure to ask your child how they are doing in their classes and if there are any topic areas where they may need additional support. With a goodnight’s rest and your support and encouragement, they’ll be ready to tackle midterms!
Los exámenes parciales comienzan la próxima semana
Rogers Open House A Big Success
It was standing-room only last Wednesday 9/28/22 in the Rogers High School cafeteria for the annual Open House. Several hundred guests were addressed by Principal Jared Vance, Mrs. Evelyn Folcarelli and others to share information and highlight student-centered opportunities such the arts, athletics, clubs, support services, career and technical programs and newer initiatives like the Student Integrity Board.
Guests were welcomed by members of the RHS PTO who work hard to support and celebrate our students, as well as the all-star JROTC cadets who were out in full force to welcome guests and escort families across campus. After the presentation, parents rotated through both RHS-NACTC buildings to connect with teachers, check out classrooms and see what students are working on. It was exciting to see representation from all areas of the Newport community as well as NACTC families who attend from the surrounding areas. Thanks to all who were able to participate!
Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month
To help celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15), Thompson Middle School Spanish teacher Olga Pardo wore her beautiful flamenco dancer outfit to school last week. Not only was she ready to dance and teach, she also helped out as a very stylish crossing guard! Gracias Ms. Pardo for all that you do for our students!

October Is National Principals Month
Being a principal is a tough job, and we’re so fortunate to have three dedicated professionals leading our schools. So during National Principals Month, we want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to Pell Principal Traci Westman, Thompson Principal Xavier Barrios, and Rogers Principal Jared Vance!

REMINDER: Returning School Meal Applications Means More Money For Newport Public Schools - Please Return By October 15th!
Free and reduced meals are an important and nutritious option for many of our students. That’s why it is critical that EVERYONE return these applications, even if your family is not eligible. The more completed meal applications we receive, the more resources we have to provide these meals. To date, we have received less than 50% of applications. Let’s get that number way up! Return your school meal application by October 15th!
Reminder: Download the Newport Public Schools App
Over the summer, Newport Public Schools invested in a beautiful new website and a new app designed to keep our entire school community better informed about updates, news, and everything that’s happening in our schools. Please take a moment to download our free Newport Public Schools App so you can get all of this great information on your mobile device.
