From Doan's Desk... From Doan's Desk...

This week we had to share the news of the tragic death of a former Monarch High School staff member, Scott Cawlfield, who is also the spouse of current staff member, Taryn Cawlfield (Language Arts Teacher). The entire community of staff, parents, and students have stepped up and asked what they can do to help and support.

A group of Class of 2025 Seniors are making a donation box that will be placed in the attendance office. Anyone in the community that wants to bring in cards, gifts, or donations of any kind can be placed in the box so it can be delivered to Mrs Cawlfield. There is also a GoFundMe site that has been setup for anyone wanting to give in ways to help with funeral costs and in support of the family.

Thank you to everyone that has reached out and offered support to the MoHi teaching staff. Everything is appreciated and we are grateful for the grace and understanding that everyone has shown.

Coyote Cave

The ILC has been working hard on creating and selling for the cave! Here are some of the things we have been up to. If you ever want to swing by during 1st period to make a purchase, we'd love to see you. We take Venmo and cash. We will soon have access to credit.

Thank you in advance for supporting the ILC.

Fat Heads by Coyote Creations

My name is Kayla Everding and I run the Coyote Creations business for Monarch DECA. Coyote Creations is a print shop; we make banners, fat heads, stickers, and tote bags. Our most popular item is our fat-heads which you may have seen at sporting events. These fat heads are a picture of a face on a piece of cardboard. We do them one-sided with a current picture or two-sided where there is a baby picture on one side and a current picture on the other.

These fat heads are a great way to show support and celebrate your child! They are great for senior nights, cheering from the sidelines for any sport, and graduation. If you would like to purchase a fat head for graduation or any senior sporting night, the dates available to purchase are March 13th-April 1st. More information can be found in the document below. All profits will go towards sending the DECA international qualifiers to Orlando this April!

SENIOR POSTERS

Senior posters due April 1-4

It has been a long-standing tradition at Monarch HS for senior families to create a photo poster to celebrate their graduating senior. Typically these posters have been displayed only at After Prom, but this year they will be on display at Monarch HS for the week leading up to Prom/After Prom. Please look here for senior poster guidelines and examples. Posters must be dropped off at the Monarch front office between April 1-4 and they should be collected April 14-17—many families re-use these posters for graduation parties. Contact monarchafterprom@gmail.com with questions.

2025 State Testing Information

As you may know, our students will take the State of Colorado’s Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) Science as well as the PSAT9/PSAT10 and SAT in April. I would like to take a moment to encourage everyone to have their children take the test and to thank you for your support last year. With your support, your student can help show how well our school and the school district, as a whole, is performing. If you would like to opt out your student of any of the tests listed above, please complete this Google form.

By participating in the state assessments:

  • Our educators will have access to valuable data about the performance of our students and apples-to-apples comparisons with students across the state

  • Data collected helps Boulder Valley School District determine if curriculum and instruction practices are working, helping to direct resources and professional development

  • The scores determine the designation the state gives our school. Currently, we are considered a performance school and we’d like to keep that designation moving forward, in part because receiving a lower designation may impact our school’s reputation and lead to additional review of our plans

  • The better we do on our tests, the better our grades on sites like CDE’s SchoolView, Niche, School Grades, etc. These grades are, in part, what prospective parents/guardians use to compare us with other schools in the area -- and a pride point for our school community

Consistent with last year’s administration, our entire focus will be on supporting students as they take the test. As a result, families are asked (though not required) to arrange an excused absence from school on testing days and appropriate alternative activities of their own if their child will not be participating. Below is a specific list of the tests and which grades will be taking the tests.

Again, I would like to encourage all of our students to participate in testing this year. If you have questions, I welcome the opportunity to chat with you about this important effort no later than March 5, which is the district deadline for submitting written requests to opt a student out of testing. Click here for additional information about testing, including a general schedule of these assessments in the Boulder Valley School District, including the grades affected.

For any questions or concerns or to request more information, please contact either assistant principal Ailey Ruger or assistant principal Dr. Cara Maronek.

TESTING OPT OUT FORM
You must complete the form for each test that your student is taking in order to opt out of all of tests.

For students who have testing accommodations, testing slips with your students' accommodation and what room they will be testing in were sent out on Thursday, March 13th. You can reach out to Dr. Maronek if your student did not get an accommodation slip, and you feel this is an error. We will have lists on test day to make sure your student gets to the room they are going to test in case this slip gets lost before then.
