Parent Liaison Corner

Remember, YOU are your child's greatest cheerleader!

What does a Parent Liaison do?

A School Parent Liaison serves as a communication link between home and school. They welcome and orient families to the schools and familiarize the families with the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. The primary role of the School Parent Liaison is to empower parents to become active participants in the education of their children to ensure their child's academic and social success in school.

How can I support you?

  • Encourage open communication between you and school personnel.
  • Explain the process of conferences and school meetings.
  • Explain school policies, practices, and programs.
  • Provide information about school goals, resources, and activities.
  • Provide various communication platforms that engage families:
    • Parent Vue
    • School Status (supports multiple languages translations)
    • School Newsletter
    • School Website

MULTICULTURAL NIGHT 2026

MULTICULTURAL NIGHT 2026

Alvey’s Multicultural Night is on Friday, November 20th from 6-7:30 pm. Join us as we celebrate and discover cultures from around the world. We welcome all Alvey families to share a piece of their cultural heritage by providing food samples, demonstrating family friendly activities and/or wearing their native clothing. Would you like to share your culture and/or heritage with the Alvey community? Please consider signing up to host a country/cultural booth. If hosting a booth, please provide a poster board with facts and information about your country, a game/activity and/or a food dish (include an ingredient list) that can be sampled, and if you would like to wear traditional clothing, please do so. If you are preparing a food dish please plan to bring serving utensils and have any food that needs to be heated done so ahead of time. Sampling cups, plasticware and gloves will be provided for anyone that is preparing a food dish. You are invited to set your booth up prior to the event, starting at 5 pm.  During the event, we will have a "Walk the Red Carpet" for students to show off their cultural clothing. Students must be signed up ahead of time if they would like to participate in this. There will also be a mandatory rehearsal on Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18 at 8:00am for students. This will provide them with an opportunity to practice before the night of the event. Students do not need to bring their cultural clothing to the rehearsal. The sign-up deadline to host a booth and walk the red carpet will be Friday 11/6. For additional questions please contact hedricmd@pwcs.edu or mareshjm@pwcs.edu . We are looking forward to a successful event!

Purpose Powered by People

As a non-profit, we love thanking people like our wonderful donors and volunteers, as well as showing appreciation for the families, schools, educators, and youth we serve. Yet there is another amazing group of people that deserves so much gratitude. This month, I’m shining a light on the people that power our mission, day in and day out: the educators making STEM accessible at the Lab and in the community, and the professionals working just as hard behind the scenes.

Our staff put so much heart into their work—it is truly extraordinary! Whether it is coming up with the most creative way to share community impact or a new program, designing curriculum that leans into failure as an essential part of the scientific method and engineering design process, advocating for transit to make it easier to reach the science center, or the essential work of keeping our finances, spaces, databases, and systems in order, they consistently give it their all. I am the lucky person that gets to witness the countless ways our staff lift up our mission each day...and it is a beautiful view.

We can only help kids if we have the clothes to give them, and right now we urgently need your help.

Families across our community count on Boxes of Basics for the everyday clothing their kids need to feel confident at school, at home, and everywhere in between. Your gently used kids' clothes can go straight into a box for a child who's waiting.

Here's how you can help this week:

1. Clean out the closets and gather what your kids have outgrown.

2. Find a drop-off location near you: https://boxesofbasics.org/where-to-donate-clothes-1

3. Pass this along to friends, neighbors, and your kids' school community.

Every shirt, pair of pants, and pair of socks makes a difference. Thank you for making sure no child goes without.

With gratitude,

Sarah Tyndall
