Research on Sleep by Age
- Ages 3-5: 10-13 hours
- Ages 6-12 (elementary): 9-12 hours
- Ages 13-18: 8-10 hours
Why It Matters
Research has found that children who consistently get adequate sleep demonstrate:
- Better attention and focus
- Improved learning and memory
- Stronger emotional regulation
- Better behavior
- Improved physical and mental health
Children who regularly get less than the recommended amount are at greater risk for:
- Attention and behavior problems
- Difficulty learning
- Increased accidents and injuries
- Obesity and diabetes risk
- Anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns
What This Means for Schools
As an elementary principal, a helpful talking point with families is:
"Most elementary-aged children need 9-12 hours of sleep each night. Adequate sleep is one of the strongest predictors of a child's ability to pay attention, regulate emotions, learn new material, and behave appropriately at school."
For many students, especially those ages 6-10, 10-11 hours is often the sweet spot for optimal performance in school. Students consistently getting fewer than 9 hours may show symptoms that look like ADHD, lack of motivation, or behavior concerns when the root cause may actually be sleep deprivation. Our Fall Fundraiser Is Here! 🎃
This year, we’re working toward a $15,000 goal to support our SWE students and staff! Funds raised help provide field trips and educational programs, classroom resources, family events, class parties, staff appreciation and more.
Register your Explorer, share their fundraising link with family and friends, and help them earn some fun prizes along the way!
Then we’ll celebrate together at our 4th Annual Trunk or SWE Treat on Friday, October 30. We’re also looking for families and friends to host a trunk—decorate your car, pass out treats, and be part of one of our favorite SWE traditions.
