Themes of the Month
CMIT South Elementary May Themes
Character Theme: Perseverance
STEM Theme: Greenhouses
Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Elementary Families and Friends,
As we embrace the final full week of May, I want to take a moment to pour an extra dose of encouragement into our amazing scholars and dedicated parents. The end of the school year brings a fast-moving calendar and plenty of energy, yet our Tigers continue to show up every day with bright smiles and focused minds. Parents, thank you for your steady support at home that keeps our students motivated and moving forward!
Our character word for May is Perseverance. As we navigate these final academic milestone weeks, let’s share this reflection with our scholars:
"Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th." — Julie Andrews
Success rarely happens on the first try—it is the choice to keep trying, keep growing, and keep pushing forward that defines a true CMIT South Tiger!
📅 Memorial Day Holiday Notice
Please remember that there is no school on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day. We hope all of our families enjoy a safe, restful, and wonderful day off as we honor and remember those who served. We look forward to welcoming our scholars back to the building on Tuesday morning, ready to learn!
🏆 Championship Glory: Basketball Teams Dominate!
We have some massive news from the hardwood! Please join me in sending a huge shout-out to our phenomenal basketball teams for their spectacular performances in the 2026 Impact Rising Star Basketball League.
Our Tiger athletes completely took over the league:
Team Young fought hard to capture the Championship Title! 🏆
Team Jenkins matched that excellence right alongside them, finishing as the league Runner-Up! 🥈
We want to extend a giant thank you to Coach Young and Coach Jenkins for their incredible dedication, mentorship, and the countless hours they pour into our scholars. Your passion for the game and for our students' character development has truly taught them what it means to work as a team and perform like champions. Way to Level UP, Tigers!
📝 Looking Ahead: End-of-Year MAP Growth Testing
Starting this week and continuing over the next two weeks, our scholars will challenge themselves one final time this year as they take their End-of-Year MAP Growth Assessments.
Our Testing Schedule:
Grades K–5: MAP Growth Reading & Mathematics
Grades 2–5: MAP Growth Science
Why This Matters:
We want to reassure our families and students that these tests are not used for report card grades. Instead, MAP is an invaluable diagnostic tool. The data collected allows us to celebrate the tremendous academic progress your child has made since the fall, while helping our instructional team pinpoint specific strengths and target areas to support them as they "Level Up" into the upcoming school year.
How You Can Help at Home:
Rest & Nourish: Ensure your Tiger gets a great night's sleep and eats a healthy, fueling breakfast each morning.
Arrive on Time: Prompt attendance is crucial to ensure a calm, smooth testing environment for your scholar.
Positive Vibes: Remind your child to simply take their time, do their personal best, and let their knowledge shine!
📅 Looking Ahead: End-of-Year Reminders
As we navigate the remaining weeks of the 2025–2026 school year, please keep a close eye on upcoming calendar announcements. We have several end-of-year celebrations, field trips, and promotional ceremonies in the works, and we want to ensure all families have timely information to participate.

🎂 Birthday Celebrations 🎂
Birthdays are so much fun to celebrate with classmates. However, during the school day, the health and safety of each student are important, especially students with food allergies. Students are ONLY permitted to bring in NON-FOOD items to distribute to classmates at the end of the school day. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all of our students safe at CMIT South ES.
Additionally, please note that teachers and staff are unable to participate in distributing communications/invitations or email addresses related to birthday celebrations. All planning for birthdays needs to happen outside of school so that it does not take away from the purpose of instruction.

Counselor's Corner
With the school year quickly coming to a close, this is a wonderful time to reflect on how much our students have grown both inside and outside of the classroom! During the month of May, students have been focusing on the character trait of perseverance and learning the value of continuing to work hard, stay positive, and keep trying even when things feel difficult. Families can help build perseverance at home by encouraging children to try again after making mistakes, praising effort instead of just results, setting small achievable goals, and allowing children opportunities to solve problems independently. Reading books about determination, learning new skills together, and talking openly about challenges can also help children develop resilience and confidence. Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping our students grow into strong, caring, and determined learners as we finish the school year strong!
Warm regards,
Ms. Chandler
Math Department
As May comes to a close, our students are continuing to work hard and grow as mathematicians each day! It has been exciting to see their confidence build as they solve problems, explain their thinking, and apply math skills in new ways. These last few weeks are a great opportunity to keep math learning active at home and begin preparing for summer. Encourage your child to practice math facts, play number games, help with cooking measurements, count money, tell time, and look for math in everyday activities. Even a few minutes of practice each day can help students stay sharp and confident for the next school year. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in helping our students succeed in math!
Mathematically,
Coach Jones
Reading Department
Dear Tiger Families,
As we head into the final weeks of the school year, we are so proud of the growth our students have made in reading and literacy skills! This is a great time to keep encouraging strong reading habits at home as we finish the year strong and begin thinking ahead to summer learning. Reading together each day, visiting the library, practicing sight words, and talking about books are simple ways to support your child’s progress. Even everyday activities like reading signs, menus, recipes, or game instructions help build important literacy skills. Thank you for your continued partnership and support throughout the school year—we look forward to ending the year on a strong and successful note!
Warmly,
Mrs. A. Matthews

Our students continue to work hard each day, and we are so proud of all the growth they have made academically and socially. As we move through these final weeks of the school year, please be sure to read below for important updates, reminders, and upcoming events. Thank you for your continued support and partnership!
Updates:
1. Students will take MAP testing this week on Tuesday and Thursday. Be sure to send your scholar to school with a charged Chromebook and headphones on these days especially.
2. Spelling homework, DUE on Tuesday, May 26th, will be our FINAL spelling homework of the year. Scholars will continue to be introduced to new spelling patterns and high frequency words, but spelling homework has now concluded.
3. Topic 9 math homework will come home this week, if not already sent. Students should work on this nightly.
Reminders:
1. Students should bring their yellow take home folder to school and home every day. Parents, please sign their behavior calendar in acknowledgment of daily behavior. Please also remove all papers on the "Keep at Home" side.
2. Check ParentVue regularly and review all graded work.
3. The weather has changed DRASTICALLY. Please ensure your scholar comes to school dressed in accordance with the weather. We go outside as long as the temps are about 32 degrees.

We are beginning topic 9! In this unit, students will compare two-digit numbers.
Families can support math learning at home by practicing comparing 2-digit numbers, finding 1 more/1 less and 10 more/10 less, and using the greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) symbols. Use number charts, flashcards, games, or everyday numbers you see at home to help build confidence and number sense in a fun way!
Science Updates:
We are working through topic 1 on light and sound! Students are investigating how sound is made, observe different sources of light, and explore how light interacts with various objects.
Families can support this learning at home through simple, hands-on activities.
Encourage your child to notice and describe sounds around the house, create simple instruments, or explore how sounds change. You can also observe different light sources, play with shadows using a flashlight, and test household objects to see which ones let light pass through or block it.
Encouraging your child to ask questions, make predictions, and share what they notice will help build their curiosity and understanding. Thank you for supporting science learning at home!
Social Studies Updates:
Students are continuing to learn through Chapter 4- Life Today and Long Ago. In this chapter, students are learning more about the past, present, and future. They are comparing schools and communities, daily life, and even technology and transportation to the past and present! Talk about your experiences with your scholar! Reading Updates:
Reading Update: Level Up to Third Grade!
We are excited to share that we have officially concluded our reading curriculum for the school year! Our scholars have worked so hard to grow their literacy skills, and we are incredibly proud of their progress.
Please keep an eye out, as scholars will be bringing their reading textbooks home soon! These are yours to keep—textbooks DO NOT have to be returned to school. They are a great resource to use for review over the coming weeks.
To ensure our scholars stay sharp and are fully prepared for the jump to third grade, we recommend the following daily habits:
Reading: Please have your scholar read for at least 15 minutes every night.
Skill Practice: Continue practicing on IXL to reinforce key skills and keep that momentum going!
Thank you for your continued partnership in your scholar's success!
Math Updates:
Learning Update: Money, Time, and Shapes!
Hi Families! We have a busy and exciting week ahead as we wrap up our current unit and dive into some hands-on geometry. Here is what we are working on:
Closing Out Topic 8: Money & Time
We will conclude Topic 8 this week! While we are finishing the formal lessons in class, it is vital that scholars continue practicing these "real-world" skills at home to build fluency.
Try these activities at home:
The Family Diner: Have your scholar "charge" you for snacks or dinner using play money or coins. Ask them to show you different ways to make $1.00.
Time Check: Throughout the day, ask your scholar, "What time will it be in 30 minutes?" or "How many minutes until the next hour?"
Coin Sort: Empty a jar of change and have them identify, sort, and total the coins.
Coming Soon: Exploring Shapes!
As we close out the school year, we will begin exploring the world of Geometry! We will be identifying, comparing, and building 2D and 3D shapes.
Activities for practicing shapes:
Shape Scavenger Hunt: Look for 3D shapes around the house! Can they find a sphere (orange), a cylinder (soup can), or a rectangular prism (cereal box)?
Attribute Talk: Ask your scholar to describe a shape without naming it. For example: "I am thinking of a 2D shape with 3 sides and 3 vertices (corners). What am I?" (A triangle!)
Play-Doh Builders: Use Play-Doh or toothpicks and marshmallows to build cubes, pyramids, and squares. 🏗️
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our scholars' brains growing!
3rd Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
All students completed Dibels and iReady tests this week. They are showing growth and we are pleased with their progress. However, more testing is on the horizon! MAP testing is now this coming week on Wednesday, May 27 - Friday, May 29.
Students will need lunch for the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary trip on Tuesday, May 26. Please adhere to the dress code for your child’s safety while being out in nature. This includes long sleeve shirts, long pants, and insect repellent. It might also be good to have a baseball-style cap.
Field Day permission slips were due on Thursday, May 21. Field day is scheduled for June 5th and the rain date is June 8th. We will be walking from our school up to CMIT Middle/High School for this event. Students will need a lunch that day.
Please remember that school is closed on May 25th to observe Memorial Day. Have a wonderful long weekend!
Reading Updates:
This week, students worked hard to complete their DIBELS and I-Ready Reading assessments. We are so proud of the tremendous growth, focus, and perseverance they showed. It has been exciting to see their hard work paying off as confident readers!
Social Studies Updates:
Students began thinking about future careers, entrepreneurship, and different ways to make money as they grow older. We’ve had great conversations about goals, interests, and the many paths students can take in the future!
Math Updates:
This week, our mathematicians explored the exciting topic of probability! Probability is the chance or likelihood that a specific event will happen, helping us predict how often something might occur. Students learned to describe outcomes as certain, likely, unlikely, or impossible. They put their new skills into action by testing the odds while choosing Starburst candies from a bag and deciding whether to go with or against the probability of picking a certain color.
Science Updates:
Our Scientists are wrapping up our unit on fossils. They put their paleontological skills to work by completing final unit activities. We will start a fun new topic this coming week.
Health Updates:
In Health, we started our new unit on “Finding Out About Bones.” The students watched a video on the skeletal system and completed corresponding questions.
4th Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Greetings Team 4Ward,
I hope that message finds you well. We enjoyed our final grade level trip to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. Our students got a chance to explore different living things from around the world. This upcoming week we will have our Spring MAP Diagnostics in Reading and Math on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will be using Thursday and Friday for Makeup days of testing. This is an untimed diagnostic test that measures students' growth throughout the school year. Testing will begin at 8:30.
Help your scholar prepare by:
Getting at least eight hours of sleep
Eating breakfast the day of testing
Having a charged computer
Have a pair of wired headphones
A quick snack for after if wanted
Writing is being incorporated in all subjects this year. Students will practice expressing ideas in reading, science, social studies, math, and specials. Encourage your child to talk about what they write and ask questions about their work that supports growth and confidence.
💻Many class activities use online tools. A charged computer ensures your child can fully participate in lessons and complete assignments. Our students also need a pair of wired headphones to complete activities and for testing. Students who arrive on time are better prepared for learning and reduce classroom disruptions. Please plan to have your child at school a few minutes early each day. A healthy breakfast helps students focus and have energy for learning. School breakfast is available daily until 8:00 when students arrive in the morning.
We are grateful for your ongoing support in helping students feel safe, prepared, and excited about learning. Thank you for partnering with us to make this a positive school year. Let’s finish strong together!!
Warmly,
Team 4Ward

This program will be available all summer for students to continue to utilize in both reading and math. Please help your child complete at least 45 minutes of math and reading to grow their abilities.
Absences:
This is a friendly reminder that late work is only accepted if a student has an excused absence! If a scholar is absent and does not bring a note they will earn a 0 on the assignment that was missed. Parents can support learning at home by encouraging scholars to:
Explain how they solved a problem (not just the answer)
Practice multiplication facts regularly
Complete assigned IXL skills that reinforce division concepts.
Science Updates:
In science, scholars are exploring the unit Human Uses of Energy. We will be completing this unit.
Students are learning how energy plays an important role in our everyday lives and how humans harness different energy sources to power technology and systems we depend on.
Topics we are exploring include:
Types of energy
How energy is transferred and used
Real-world examples of energy in transportation, electricity, and machines
How energy systems help communities function
Scholars are also engaging in research-based activities and project tasks where they apply math skills such as division, measurement, and data interpretation to scientific situations.
This interdisciplinary approach helps scholars see how math and science work together in real-world problem solving.
💡 Skills We Are Building
Across both subjects, scholars are developing important academic habits including:
Perseverance when solving challenging problems
Explaining and defending their thinking
Collaborating with peers
Using academic vocabulary
Applying knowledge to real-world situations
📌 Helpful Reminders for Families
