Deaf Awareness Week at Lister School
We are excited to let you know that Lister School will be celebrating Deaf Awareness Week with a range of activities, assemblies, and competitions to help raise awareness and understanding of the deaf community.
Throughout the week, students will take part in events designed to promote inclusion and celebrate the achievements of deaf individuals.
As part of the celebrations, we will be holding a Bake Sale on Wednesday 7th May at break time, where students will have the chance to buy freshly baked cupcakes and other treats. We kindly ask parents and carers to send their child in with some change on the day so they can take part and help raise funds to support deaf awareness initiatives in school.
Thank you for your continued support, we look forward to a fantastic week of learning and celebration!
SignHealth Workshop at Lister
This week, our deaf students at Lister took part in a bespoke workshop delivered by deaf adults from SignHealth. The session focused on raising awareness about forced marriages and honour-based abuse, a local issue that is important to address within our community.
The workshop provided vital information in British Sign Language (BSL) about recognising the signs of these forms of abuse, understanding personal rights, and knowing what to do and who to contact for help. It was empowering for students to receive this information directly from deaf professionals who could share their knowledge and experiences.
The students engaged well with the session and found it both informative and supportive.
Eric Underwood, former Royal Ballet star visits Lister
Selected students participated in a fantastic workshop with Eric Underwood. He enthralled the students with his fabulous technique, charisma and stories of his ballet experience which has taken him around the world. He has also worked with some really famous actors and musicians, including Taylor Swift, and Idris Elba. We hope we can welcome him back to Lister in the future!
Year 11 Countdown
More weeks have gone. This is shown in the picture, which is being shared by English teachers as a way to prompt their students into working harder and longer to get to those final GCSE outcomes. There are lots of intervention sessions available after school and before school for Lister students. Whilst the majority of these sessions are targeted, most teachers will be happy to include volunteer students who want to get on with some extra work. Some students will be invited into school during the first week of the Easter holidays for further intervention. All students are welcome to use the library as a study space. If you receive the invitation, please make sure your child attends.
Here is a list of supportive strategies that you can use to help your child:
- Establish a quiet and dedicated study space.
- Minimize distractions during study time.
- Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Assist in creating a revision timetable.
- Ensure they are taking regular breaks and maintaining a healthy balance.
- Help them prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
- Emphasize the importance of consistent, short revision sessions rather than last-minute cramming.
- Help them use effective revision techniques (e.g., flashcards, mind maps, practice papers).
- Limit Screen Time:
- Encourage them to limit the time spent on phones and social media.
- Offer to take phones away for periods of solid revision, so that they do not have to resist the urge to use their phones.
- Help them use technology as a revision tool, not a distraction.
Lastly - Celebrate Successes!
- Acknowledge and celebrate their efforts and achievements, no matter how small.
- Reassure them that you are proud of them, regardless of the outcome.
